“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2010 33 inform their readers about our anniversary. The anniversary celebration took place during a festive luncheon held at the Sisterhood Hall of St. Andrew’s Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, Ne w Jersey. Branch president Victoria Mischenko introduced the program, and Luba Bilowchtchuk served as mistress of ceremonies. The program included a brief history of our branch, highlights of many of our events, vocal enter - tainment, a sing - along, a raffle of donated artwork, a Chinese auction, and a delicious lunch with many desserts. Branch 98 held its Christmas party on December 6, 2009 at the home of its treasurer, Mrs. Orysia Jacus. Among our guests was Jaroslawa Mulyk, vice president of the New Jersey Regional Council. This festive event capped a busy year of activities for the branch. Branch 98 is a small branch; we have no parish affiliation, but we do have a dedicated and hard - working membership — women who have fulfilled our branch obligations to the UNWLA over the past 21 years. In 2009, we happily welcomed two new members: Yaroslawa Kochman and Lyubov Zubyk. Both have proved to be a great asset to our branch . All fourteen branch members plan to continue our efforts to support the goals of the UNWLA in 2010. Irene Krawczuk , Branch 98 Secretary DETROIT RINGS IN 2010 Natalia Lypeckyj - Tarnavsky, president of newly formed Detroit Branch 132, enjoying the sing - a - long with husband Orest and children Romko and Chrystynk a. On Saturday , January 16, 2010, following the first monthly meeting of the New Year, Detroit’s Regional Council held its annual Koliada sing - along. For many Soyuzianky this tradition completes the holiday season, giving UNWLA members and their families a chance to relax, have fun, and sing. All those attending were given a songbook to follow. Christine Lypeckyj (Br. 96) and Ruslana Pronko (Br. 129) led the singing, accompanied by Olya Solovey (Br. 58) on piano. With a full domivka of ladies representing all 11 Detroit area branches, the unforgettable Ukrainian melodies rang out loud and clear. As Mistress of Ceremonies , Ruslana Pronko offered wonderful Yuletide greetings between songs , and branch presidents extended good wishes from their m embers . Tanya Bedrus ( Br. 76 ) entertained by singing a cappella , while Vera Andrushkiw (Br. 96) recounted the interesting history of the New Year’s carol Schedryk, the tale of a swallow flying into a household to announce an abundant year ahead. Vera expla ined that c omposer Mykola Leontowych had arranged Schedryk in 1916 while at Kyiv University , and that t he Ukrainian National Chorus performed the song at Carnegie Hall in October 1921, under the direction of Oleksander Koshetz. The tale took a curious turn in 1 936, when Peter Wilhousky of NBC Radio copyrighted new lyrics to the u nmistakable melody, and it became k nown in this country as Carol of the Bells . Today, different renditions of the song have been popularized by Mannheim Steamroller, Barry Manilow, the Trans Siberian Orchestra, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir , and even the Muppets. Elizabeth Kuczer, English Press Chair and member of Detroit Branch 115 .
