“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2010 23 once - mighty Branch 10 led to numerous discussions with Regional Council President Christine Chomyn - Izak. But the president and the membership chair were also communicating on another matter — the possibility of creating a new Philadelphia branch consisting of young women who had been born in Ukraine , had come to the United States as children or teenagers , and were now in their twenties. These young women had learned about the UNWLA gradu ally, mostly through the endeavors of Branch 128, which was created with the aim of working with young people and preserving the customs and traditions of Ukraine. In planning programs and events, Branch 128 members had made a concerted effort to invite th e young women to attend and to participate, and it was this gentle and non - aggressive “recruitment” campaign that had promoted interest in the organization and interest in membership. While this was all fine and good, the group of twenty - somethings number ed 7, and UNWLA bylaws expressly state that new branches must have a minimum of 10 members. And while the young ladies were welcome to join their friends in Branch 128, there were log istics problems stemming from time and distance that made this affiliatio n difficult. And then, in an interesting confluence of time, space, and circumstance, a wonderful idea emerged. It began with an “aha moment” from Halyna Martyn — one that blossomed and came to fruition through extended discussions among R egional C ouncil Pr esident Christine Chomyn - Izak, the Membership Chair, the 20 - somethings, and the nine remaining members of Branch 10. The result was an idea that crystallized into an incredibly lovely and inspirational solution, which was cemented and celebrated at an even t held on Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Philadelphia’s Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center — the official and formal transfer of the old Branch 10 to new membership, new leadership, and new horizons while preserving the distinguished history, name, and patron ess of the original Branch 10. The program began with brief introductory comments from President Yulia Drobakha, an official welcome to the new Branch 10 from R egional Council P resident Christine Chomyn - Izak, and a slide presentation highlighting t he history of the original Branch 10 founded in 1953. This was followed by a “get to know us” presentation of the new members of the branch, each of whom introduced herself and told a little about her origins, her education, her work, and her aspirations. The program continued with a performance entitled “No, I am alive! I will live forever!” — a tribute to branch patroness Lesia Ukrainka, which culminated in a candle lighting ceremony, a touching symbolic tribute to the great “ S pirit of F lame.” Speaking on behalf of the original Branch 10, Anna Zabrocky welcomed the new members, formally transferring the branch to them and explaining that she and the remaining members of the original branch would be remaining in the UNWLA as Members at Large. “You’ll do thi ngs differently. New times, new ways. We wish you health and success.” There were many warm words and hugs between those entering the branch and those leaving it. An official welcome to the newly inducted members was also offered by Branch 128. On behalf of the branch, member Oksana Hlado presented the new Branch 10 with a rushnyk embellished with a necklace of seven wooden beads, one for each of the new members. She explained that the ribbon hanging below the wooden beads was intentional — leaving room for additional beads as other women became part of the branch’s future. Representing the UNWLA Executive Committee at the event was UNWLA Audit Committee Chair Oxana Farion, who thanked the members of the original Branch 10 for their decades of service and fo r passing their legacy on to the younger women . She then read UNWLA President Marianna Zajac’s official greetings to the new Branch 10. With the official ceremonies concluded, those attending partook of refreshment for the body as well as the soul — a tasty buffet and a tasteful and interesting exhibit of artistic photographs by Vera Partem, member of the new Branch 10. – TSC ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The generations pass, and like runne rs hand on the torch of life . – Lucretius, 57 B.C.
