32 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2010 REPORT ON 2009 ACTIVITIES BRANCH 98, HOLMDEL/MIDDLETOWN, NEW JERSEY Left to right 1st row: Anna Krawczuk, M. Orysia Jacus, Victoria Mischenko, Olga Tychyj, Jaroslawa Mulyk, Lyubov Zubyk. 2nd row: Yaroslawa Kochman, Irene Krawczuk, Mari a Polanskyj, Luba Bilowchtchuk, Halyna Jakubowicz, Elizabeth Barna, Alexandra Hundzy, Oksana Koziak. The first order of business in 2009 was the election held on February 1. Branch President Victoria Mischenko, Treasurer M. Orysia Jacus, and Secretary Irene Krawczuk were reelected for a second two - year term and Elizabeth Barna was elected to serve as branch vice president. Maria Polanskyj and Anna Krawczuk were elected as social welfare chair and auditing chair, respectively. Luba Bilowchtchuk retained her position as chair of the scholarship committee. We are proud that Luba and four of our members serve on the UNWLA Scholarship/Children Student Sponsorship Program Committee under the leadership of National Scho larship Chair Maria Polanskyj. With the installation of the officers, the branch began its busy year. Eight meetings, two fundraising events, two articles in Our Life , a package to Brazil, visits to the elderly, Christmas cards and a gift basket to the mil itary, as well as our 21st anniversary celebration kept members busy. Our fundraising activities included a garage sale and what has become an annual event: gift - wrapping at a local Barnes and Noble bookstore. Members donated bric - a - brac for the garage sal e that was held at the home of Luba Bilowchtchuk. Proceeds from the garage sale enabled us to send a package of clothing, school supplies, and embroid - ery threads to the Colegio Santa Olga in Brazil. Fittingly, our branch’s patroness is St. Olga. Our socia l welfare chair, Maria Polanskyj, initiated a plan to visit elderly people who are housebound or in nursing homes. Mrs. Polansky j , M. Orysia Jacus, and Lyubov Zubyk visited three Ukrainian seniors in local nursing homes , bringing small gifts. One of the nu rsing home patients they visited had not had any visitors, other than a priest, in nine years. Another branch - supported effort was recognition of Ukrainian Americans serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our members sent Christmas cards to three U.S. soldiers and a small gift basket of food products to another. Our plans are to expand this effort for Easter and Christmas 2010. The branch continues to provide a sub - scription of Our Life to Soyuz Ukrainok Ukrainy in Kyiv. One member funds a subscription for Soyu z Ukrainok in Lviv; another sends her copy of Our Life to Ukraine as well. Two members pay for gift subscriptions to catechists of the Sacred Heart Institute in Prudentopolis, Parana, Brazil. We thank Our Life editor Tamara Stad - nychenko for publishing tw o articles about Branch 98 in Our Life in 2009, one summarizing our activities in 2008 and the other reporting on our 21st anniversary celebration held on June 7, 2009. We are also grateful to Roma Hadzewycz, editor - in - chief of The Ukrainian Weekly, and Le o Iwaskiw, editor of America, for giving us the opportunity to Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
