tax tips compiled by Oksana Xenos The IRS’s Exempt Organizations Customer Education and Outreach office is conducting a new series of free, one-day workshops designed for small and mid-sized exempt organizations in various locations throughout the United States. The workshops, presented by experienced exempt or ganizations revenue agents and tax law specialists, explain what exempt organizations must do to main tain their tax exempt status and comply with tax obli gations. So far this year, workshops have been con ducted in San Francisco, Jacksonville, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Seattle, Kansas City (KS), Durham (NC), Garden City (NY), and Indianapolis (IN). The loca tions and dates of the upcoming workshops are as fol lows: Harrisburg, PA June 3, 4 & 5 Detroit, MI June 17, 18 & 19 Albany, NY June 24, 25 & 26 The following workshop topics will be presented: Exemption and filing requirements. Basic require ments for the most common types of exempt organiza tions. Tips on record-keeping and on completing and filing Form 990. Unrelated business income tax. The definition of unrelated business income, common examples, and common exceptions. Filing requirements for Form 990-T. Public inspection and disclosure. Overview of the information available for public inspection. Disclo sures required for fund-raising solicitations. Employment taxes. Classification of employees, tax able payments, filing requirements. Gaming activities. Reporting requirements for exempt organizations participating in gaming activities. Types of taxes assessed on gaming activities. Audit process. Types of IRS audits, records required, and how the process works. Tell the representative you want to register for an Exempt Organizations work shop You can also register by e-mail. Point your browser to www.irs.gov/charities/topic/index.html Click “Calen dar of Events” in the Topics list. Download and com plete the registration form for the “EO Workshop” and e-mail the form to tege.eo.ceo@irs.gov Once your registration is confirmed, you will be sent a letter with a map and directions to the location of the workshop. Workshops are limited to approximately 75 attendees and are filled first-come, first-served. Oksana Xenos is an attorney and tax law specialist with the U. S. Department of Treasury in Washington, DC. She is also a retired Lieutenant Colonel (JAG Corps-USAR) and Foreign Area O fficer qualified in dual specialties (Ukrainian and Greek). Ms. Xenos received her law de gree and her MA and BA from Wayne State University. A member-at-large, she serves as parliamentarian of the UNWLA.
