world outside of the community. As an officer of NCW, I learned many important things. One is that when a woman commits herself to do a job you can be assured that it will be done to the best of her ability. Another is that the President and Executive Committee of the NCW are respected and supported by a membership that is committed to the organization and its goals and principles. Members of NCW would never speak ill about their Board and Executive Committee to out siders. Another important things about the NCW is the way members address things they do not like, decisions they disapprove of, and policies they believe to be inappropriate. Criticism in the NCW is never just criticism. It begins with a word of thanks for work that has been done well. This, in turn, leads to suggestions and recommenda tions on how something might be improved. The final step is an offer to help. It is a wonderful system that pro duces wonderful results and we should try to implement such a system in our own organization. I am very proud that I have had the opportunity to lead the NCW and the UNWLA because I believe that both organization have made a difference in many lives. But I also believe that the UNWLA has the potential to do more, to aim higher, and to be better. We have a solid foundation; if we build on it with pride and determination, we will surely succeed. The World of the 21st Century Woman Conference A Comprehensive Report Banner welcoming conference participants adorns main building at Soyuzivka. An air of camaraderie and goodwill filled Soyuzivka during the weekend of April 4th-6th when the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America’s Branch 95 held “The World of the 21st Century Woman” Conference. The organizers’ goal was to bring together Ukrainian American women in an in formal setting to share their thoughts and ideas and to network. And the conference surpassed even the or ganizers’ hopes - it was a resounding success! The newly refurbished lobby of Soyuzivka’s main house, decorated by Branch 95 with beautiful “kilimy,” served as the setting for Friday night’s open ing program. It was here that the ladies who had trav eled from Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut went out of their way to meet and greet each other. The Friday evening agenda began with a greeting from the confer ence Chair, a wine tasting, an art exhibit, and a book reading and signing. The wine, which came from local Hudson Valley vineyards, was much appreciated by the women who had braved poor weather to be present at this function. The art exhibit, organized by Ulana Hajdar, was a wealth of talent displayed in an eye-catching manner. The works of the following Ukrainian women artists were featured: Oksana Cehelsky Klapiscak, Anya Farion, Jaroslava Gerulak, Irene Homotiuk Zie- lyk, Olga Maryschuk, Christina Saj, Ulana Salewycz Hajdar, Ilona Sochynsky, Zoriana Sokhatska, Marian na Szczawinsky Crans, and Halyna Tytla. The individ ual artists’ styles and mediums were briefly described by Ms. Hajdar. Later that evening, with everyone comfortably seated with wine in hand, the lights were dimmed, and author Irene Zabytko was introduced to the congenial group. Ms. Zabytko is a bilingual, first-generation Ukrainian American who grew up in the Ukrainian Village of Chicago. She is the author of The Sky Un washed, a novel about Chernobyl, which has received numerous awards. During this conference, however, Ms. Zabytko's presentation focused on her latest book, When Luba Leaves Home.
