Jaroslaw Kurowyckyj, Vera Staruch, Marianna Zajac, Dr. Natalia Martynenko, Mr. Martynenko, and Iryna Kurowyckyj Dr. Marta Kushnir, a board certified internist and current secretary of the Ukrainian Medical Asso ciation of North America (New York Chapter), spoke on women’s health issues. The main point made by Dr. Kushnir was that, as women, we have different medi cal needs and different parameters than men. Most studies and generalizations in the medical field refer ence males. Dr. Kushnir touched on medical issues that many were not familiar with and then she re sponded to numerous questions. “Careers in a Male Dominant Society” fea tured four professional and very qualified ladies in different areas of expertise. This panel was moderated by Nadia Ratycz, project manager and the only female in a department of 140 at Bayer, Inc. Ms. Ratycz is a Member of the Board of Directors of the US Ukrainian Society of Engineers. The discussion panel included Oksana Mulyk, Dr. Ivanna Ratycz, and Oksana Raw- lyuk Protenic. Ms. Mulyk is presently the Director of Payroll Reconciliation and Data Integration at ADP. Dr. Ratycz was a tenured professor of German lan guage and Literature from 1960 to 2000 at Rutgers University, where she was one of the first tenured fe male professors. She has been a member of the UN WLA since 1957 and was bestowed the title of “Hon orary Member” in 1999. Ms. Protenic is currently a professor of music at the State University of New York Conservatory of Music at Purchase. Each participant described her personal road to success and achieve ment and what sacrifices or proactive steps she had to take in order to be accepted on the same level as the men working in her field. The topic of “Elder Care” was presented by Irene D’Alessio. Ms. DAlessio, who holds a Masters in Social Work and has served for 20 years as a social worker with the elderly, regularly contributes articles to Our Life on this subject. She is a strong advocate for and cares deeply about the elderly and her presentation shared her depth of knowledge and experiences. The session, which dealt with many issues that will affect each of us at some time in our lives, was invaluable. The next and last session of the day was a hands-on subject of extreme import to today’s profes sional woman - stress management. Vera Kaminsky, who has recently opened a “Curves for Women Fitness Center” in Richboro, PA and studies Jin shin jyutsu (similar to acupressure), closed out the afternoon with much appreciated stretching exercises, meditation, and examples of relieving stress through each of our five senses. After a short break, conference participants and guests assembled in the main lobby for a cocktail hour. At the banquet that evening, conference chair Marianna Zajac, after expressing her hopes for the out come of the event, read letters of greeting from Sena tor Hillary Clinton and Governor George Pataki. Ms. Zajac was then presented with a colorful bouquet of flowers from Eva Panchyshyn and Renata Zajac, two of the “younger” members of the weekend’s events, in gratitude for her efforts to engage this age group into community discourse and activities. It was at this point in the program that UN WLA President Iryna Kurowyckyj presented a “Cer tificate of Achievement” to Branch 95. The certificate cited branch members for their outstanding efforts in public relations, within and outside of the Ukrainian community, since the branch’s inception twelve years ago, and in particular, for planning and hosting this conference. The banquet program included a brief speech from Dr. Natalia Martynenko of the Ukrainian Consu 16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2003 Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році .
