PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS PLANNED O c to b e r 3, 1986 19 3 6 On October 4 and 5, 1986 the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America will sponsor a second "Ukrainian Woman in Two Worlds” conference which will deal with the challenges and problems women face as they seek to achieve success in American society and the wholeness of (being that comes from preserving the Ukrainian spirit in their families and communities. Throughout Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5 a total of twelve panels will be held. These will focus on the Ukrainian woman’s relationship with her family and community. Panel topics will deal with parenting, care of aged parents, a discussion of how women view the Ukrainian community and women’s involvement in the American political process. On Friday, October 3, two pre-conference work shops will be held. These will focus on the prepared ness of Ukrainian society to champion Ukrainian causes within American society. For example, during the recent Chornobyl tragedy many challenges were presented to Ukrainian-Americans working in the field of media and public relations. Many of us could have helped had we known how to go about it. On October 3rd a pre conference workshop will be held offering practical hands-on experience dealing with media and public relations. This workshop will address several key skills: how to write press releases, organize telephone cam paigns, and sharpen one’s public speaking skills. The workshop, entitled “Ukrainian PR: An Orchestra Out of Tune”, is being directed by Andrij Bilyk. Dr. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak will introduce this workshop by discussing the current situation in Ukraine, and the pol itical, social and cultural activities of Ukrainians in the United States. This workshop will include an assignment to be completed prior to the conference. “The idea”, said Mr. Bilyk, “is for each participant to build a wealth of experience in advance of the conference about how the media views Ukraine and Ukrainians.” Following the workshop participants will be encouraged to use their summerlong involvement with the media to help “tune” the Ukrainian message. To register for this pre-confer ence workshop and receive an assignment return the conference registration form as soon as possible as the number of participants will be limited. Andrij Bilyk is a journalist/publicist with over 17 years of experience in print media, corporate and trade association public relations and marketing. In 1985 he formed the IMAX Corporation, an international market ing and public relations firm. The Ukrainian community best knows Mr. Bilyk as the volunteer who coordinated the media programs for the nationwide commemoration of the 1932-33 famine in Ukraine and the protest of the russification of Ukraine. Currently he is the volunteer media coordinator for the National Committee to Com memorate the Millenium of Christianity in Ukraine. Dr. Martha Bohachevsky Chomiak received her doctorate and Russian Institute Certificate from Colum bia University. She specializes in Eastern European and Russian intellectual and political history and the history of Eastern European women’s movements. At present Dr. Chomiak is a professor at Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of four books and is currently com pleting a fifth. Dr. Chomiak serves as the Vice President of the UNWLA as well as the National Council of Wom en/USA. "How to Fundraise Successfully” is the topic of the second pre-conference workshop. The workshop lead ers are Stephan Bida, who will discuss how to set up and manage endowments; Andrij Bilyk will discuss effective direct mail campaigns; and, Olga Stawnychy will discuss how to organize successful special events and activities to raise funds for small and large organi zations, and how to apply for government grants. Mrs. Stawnychy holds an MBA degree and is cur rently a broker with Liggett Realtors in Rutherford, New Jersey. She is also a partner in a real estate develop ment company. Mrs. Stawnychy has served ten years on the Board of Trustees of the Ukrainian Museum of New York. Many of those years she served as chairwoman of the Fundraising Committee. She has served as National Vice President of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America as Civic Chairwoman on New Jersey State Committee on International Woman’s Year. Stephan Bida is an MBA graduate of McGill Univer sity specializing in computer science.
