16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЖОВТЕНЬ 2012 The conference was very well prepared, and the volunteers did a magnificent job. The to p- ics presented and debated were stimulating, as was the confere nce setting. Rio is a beautiful city. Our delegation lived in the Monetary, in a small hotel perched on a mountain overlooking the city. Sometimes we traveled from the mou n- tain by tram and then took a taxi, or the taxi came to pick us up all the way on th e mountain. The hotel was once owned and operated by a French owner; other guests we encountered were mostly from religious groups. At the conference I met, quite by chance, a woman from Ukraine. I had noticed her because she was wearing an embro idered Ukrainian blouse, so I approached her. We introduced ou r- selves and I learned that she was Svitlana Sle sa - renko, Director of the NGO "Black Sea Women’s Club." It was a brief encounter — she was hurrying to a panel on women's issues and I was rushi ng to hear Hillary Clinton speak — but we exchanged cards and promised to get in touch with one another. My stay in Brazil was fascinating, but my most treasured memory of this journey was the magnificent sight of Cristo Redentor, the famous statue of Jesu s Christ associated with Rio since it was erected on a mountaintop overlooking the city in 1931. I will keep this image in my heart and in my thoughts as long as I live. MEMBER - AT - LARGE I RENE K. H ARRIS НАША ОБКЛАДИНКА Таня Михайлишин - Д ’ Авіньйон – незалежний фотограф .
