RURAL WOMEN: REALITIES AND INITIATIVES TOWARD EMPOWERMENT by Iryna Koshulap The annual sessions of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) bring together experts and activists from around the world who work toward ensuring rights and legal protection for women, women’s access to political and economic resources, as well as access to ed u- ca tion and quality healthcare. This interna tional forum presents a unique opportunity to discuss the particular problems faced by women worl d- wide, as well as share the best practices that have been used both to eliminate discrimination and to empower women. In recent years, the World Fe d- eration of Ukrainian Women’s Orga nizations (WFUWO), an NGO in Consulta tive Status with the United Nations, has been joining this forum by orga niz ing panels that help draw attention to the issues that are relevant to the U krainian soci e- ty and women in Ukraine. This year’s panel Rural Women: Realities and Initia tives toward Emp o- werment , held on March 1, focused on the fr e- quently challenging realities of women’s lives in villages. This panel was moder ated by Marianna Zaja c, President of the Ukrainian National Wo m- en’s League of America, an organizational co - sponsor of the event.
