16 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, КВІТЕНЬ 2012 mation, an open letter p rotesting Mr. Lytvyn’ s sexist remarks w as prepared by Dr. Oksana Kis’ and circulated for signatures of support. It was signed by wom en’ s organizations and leaders, and the UNWLA was one of two organizations in the diaspora who signed this letter. The letter has been widely published in the Ukrainian press.) The fact that this type of remark verbalized by an official in the national govern ment of Ukraine is accepted without major reper cussions demo n- strates the need for the Ukrainian women to be reminded of their worth and for their education to emphasize their rights to an equal status in soci e- ty. This event cemented our convictions about the importance of the UNWLA women’s/gender st u- dies lectureship projec t. The Ukrainian women in the United States must and will help the women in Ukraine come to the full realization of their potential thr ough the best vehicle possible — At the UCU/UNWLA working meeting: Sitting – Dr. Oksana Kis', Prof. Olena Dzherdzhora (UCU), Marianna Zajac; standing – Lidia Bilous, Dr. Martha Kichorowska Kebalo, Sofia Hewryk. ____________________________________ education. We will be writing to Mr. Simonovic to encourage the Human Rights Commission to re member the status of Ukrainian women while pe r- forming its 2012 universal period r e- view of Ukraine. In addition, Mr. Sim o- novic did inform us that there is follow - up action in place with Yulia Tymo shen - ko’s daughter Eugenia regard ing poss i- ble human rights viola tions during the court proce edings and following Tym o- shenko’ s imprisonment. On March 11th, a working meeting with the UCU, the UNWLA, and the UNWLA Endow - ment Advisory Council representatives was held. The objective of the meeting was to work out a concrete plan for the UNWLA women’s/gender studies lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic Un i- versity. Having just returned from Chicago R e- gional Council’s annual meeting, I was fully a ware of the fact that details need ed to be com - municate d in person to our membership — and th is was the pur pose of the initial 01/29 and 02/02 conference calls with all regional pre - sidents.
