“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2010 29 HOUSTON’S BRANCH 118 HO STS ANNUAL MASQUERADE The annual Autumn Masquerade hosted by UNWLA Branch 118 of Houston, Texas , was held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 , at the Parish Hall of Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church in Houston. The theme chosen for this year’s masquerade was “ The Wild, Wild West ,” and most attendees dressed in western attire .T he hall was smartly decorated with green paper cacti, red paper bandanas, and hay bales . The design and decorations were the work of this year's Autumn Masquerade C hair, Ol ha Seniw. Ms. Seniw , one of Branch 118 ’ s younger members , did a phenomenal job organizing the event . She is a college student, a freelance photographer , and a member of the Zhuravli Ukrainian Dancers of Houston. Prizes for best costumes were award ed in four different age groups with First Place Prizes going to Vincent Cruz for his “ Woody ” costume; Lesia Bejmuk for her “ Little House on the Prairie ” costume; Dona Ghavridel for her “ Senorita Mar - garita ” costume; and Bohdan and Mary Bejmuk for their “ W estern Pioneers ” costumes. All the prizes awarded during the evening were coordinated and packaged by Halya Seniw (Branch 118 Treasuer) and her sister, Nadija Sulyumanov (Branch 118 Hospodarka). Hannah Uschak , who is membership chair for Branch 118 and teaches high school history , wore a “ Toy Story ” costume and kept things lively with games and contests for all ages. T he v arenky - e ating c ontest , the first of its kind in Houston, was a big success . Ten freshly made, warm varenky were placed on plates for the younger contestants and fifteen varenyky were placed on plates for the older contestants. Roman Dijak finished first in the “ younger ” category , winning a furry tarantula and cash. Constantine Nou kas won in the “ older ” category and received a beautiful handmade quilt created by Branch 118 member Mary Bejmuk as well as a “ Kozak Basket , ” donated by Tetyana and Sasha Lytvynchuk and filled with a bottle of vodka, multigrain bread , and sausage. The pum pkins submitted for the p umpkin c arving contest were displayed on the hay bales . There was a tryzub pumpkin and several ghoul - face pumpkins, but the prize went to Branch 118 ’s President Martha Noukas , who carved a silhouette of a Ukrainian female dancer in a ring of flowers. T he masquerade rocked with music pro - vided by “Indian chief” DJ Michael Swydnyky and his sound assistant “Indian squaw” Marina Webb . The pair provided lively contemporary western hits mixed with traditional kolom i y kas, polkas , and waltz es. Dr essed as a farmhand , Branch 118 s ec - retary Pamela Uschak greeted all guests with a big “ Howdy ” while Martha Noukas kept the attendees happy by providing them with their favorite con - coctions at the beverage counter. The event also included a Masquerade Raffle — the prizes, won by Dona Ghavridel and Kostya Lytvynchuk were two large gift baskets donated by Mary and Bohdan Bejmuk . Spartak Tortes for the cake walk contest were baked and donated by Branch 118 member Eugenia Balaban. A tasty Ukrainian buffet dinner was also prepared by Eugenia Balaban with the help of Slava Detsyk, Maria Zhuk , and Pani Ludmilla Dovzhuk. A fun time was had by everyone an d members of Branch 118 went home happy with another successful Autumn Masquerade under their Wild We stern belts!
