22 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2010 ARC VP Nury Adrebol B. Lic da and ICW President Cosima Sche nk Montfrini , listen as ICW UN - NYC Liaison Iryna Kurowyckyj presents her report. Guatemala ns are Catholic and very religious , but it was sometimes surprising to see many young people in the se church es, at prayer on days when there was no special church Holy Day. Guatemala City does have an ecumenical presence, however: While traveling through the city , we saw a St ar of David in one of the city parks as well as a synagogue. On Wednesday evening , we were invited to a reception hosted by the by the mayor of Guate - mala City. S everal of us were presented with certifi - cates of appreciation by the mayor . On Thursday mo rning, w e listened as six doctors discuss ed women’s health issues from every aspect of a wom a n’s life. That afternoon there was more sightseeing , via a p olice b us with two officers, who were with us at all time s . We visited more churches , one of which was adorned with silver work f rom 15 th century Spain . We also toured m useums and old architectural treasures that are dilapidated and in a state of disrepair, the economic fallout of businesses relocating from the city t o the suburbs — an unhappy aspect of the poverty and problems faced by the people of Guatemala. On Thursday evening we were invited by the ARC p resident to a reception celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Guatemala’s National Cultural Club. Most of those attending were from Guate - mala’s social elite, a very select group of people that did not include “outsiders” or minorities. I t was , however, a magnificent event and we enjoyed it very much. One of the highlights of the evening was watching as President of Americas Regio nal Council Ana Maria Valladares de Goyzueta was commended and honored for holding this important conference and especially for bringing issues related to women ’s economic status and health concerns to the table.
