Cyril & Methodius, who were instrumental in bringing the Cyrillic alphabet and Slavonic liturgy to the lands of the Slavic people. This year’s festival took place at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Council 2917, in Houston, Texas. The Ukrainian community served as the host group for the event this year, and was responsi - ble for the overall planning for the event. Martha Noukas, president of Branch 118 of Houston and director of the Zhuravli Dancers of Houston, served on the Ukrainian committee . The Ukrainian enter - tainment at the festival consisted of several folk songs performed by the students of the Ridna Shkola of Houston, songs by Vlodk o Kotsiouruba and Roman Cherwonogrodsky, and Ukrainian folk dances by the Zhuravli Ukrainian Dancers of Hou - ston, whose three stunning performances on Sunday, September 26 , 2010, were a smashing success. Some of the credit for the Zhuravli Ukrain - ian Dancers’ spectacular performances can be attributed to the dance ensemble’s young artistic director, Juliana Noukas, who assumed this chal - leng ing position in March 2010. A member of Houston’s UNWLA Branch 118, Juliana has studied ballet for many year s, trained for several years with the late Pryma Roma Bohachevsky and her team of talented instructors, and also has ten years of experience performing at various festivals in and around Houston. Several new members joined the Zhuravli in the spring, and J uliana began sharing her talents and knowledge of Ukrainian dance with them, preparing them for the annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar 2010 (sponsored by Branch 118), the 2010 Houston International Festival, the San Antonio Folklife Festival and the 2010 Sts. Cyril & Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival. Julia has been assisted in these endeavors by her brother Con stan - tine Noukas, a talented dancer who also arranges music for the Zhuravli. The Zhuravli dancers opened the Slavic Heritage Festival program with a newly choreo - graphed “Pryvit” by Juliana Noukas. This was followed by several Trans - Carpathian dances, which caught the attention of the many Croatians in the audience because of the similarity in steps and rhythm to those in their own folk dances. For th eir second set, the Zhuravli Dancers wore Hutsul costumes and performed an arkan ,a hutsulka , and a couple of lively kolomiykas . In their final set, the group performed several dances from the Poltava region of Ukraine, ending with a hopak choreo - graphed b y Juliana and Constantine Noukas, which brought the audience to their feet. The 22 - year - old Juliana, the daughter of John and Martha Noukas, is a graduate student at Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas. In addition to her duties as artistic d irector of the Zhuravli, she also trains and performs with the Greek Festival Dancers of Houston, the Greek Island Dancers, and the Houston International Folk Dancers. Julia also served on the festival committee and produced the festival’s 35 - page brochure . Three other members of Branch 118 cur - rently dance with the Zhuravli Ukranian Dancers of Houston: Hannah Uschak, Nina Seniw, and Olha Seniw.
