“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2010 25 ти ва лі Національної Катедри у Вашінґ тоні чис - ленна американська публіка можливо вперше змогла почути благородне звучання бандури і українські народні пісні у виконанні Соломії. За останні два роки у Вашін ґ тоні Соло - мія Дуткевич виступила у багатьох посольствах, на фестивалях, концертах та інших культурних імпрезах. Д - р Бо гдана Урбанович G I F T S W O R T H G I V I N G A N D R E C E I V I N G by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP As we approach the end of another year, it seems natural to reflect on events that shaped the preceding twelve months. Some of the emotional memories will remain with us forever — the Chilean miners who were trapped underground and then s aved, the devastating natural disasters from earth - quake activity in Haiti , the horrific oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. These events somehow stir red our emotions, piqued ou r human concern, interest , and empathy. It doesn't matter where the traged ies t ook place or what language was spoken ; what does matter is that the events underscored the fragility of life . They also underscored the reality that a natural disaster, a devast ating accident , or a newly diagnosed disease can change a life in an instant. When such things happen, we realize what is truly important — our life and of our loved ones. From a medical perspective, this realization of the relative importance of things incl udes looking at medical advances as well as medical common sense. The list of recent advances in medicine is tremendous , but these advances are helpful only if we adopt and maintain good habits and live a life that balances good physical and emotional health. Despite all the new knowledge and insight, many of us still seem to “ not get it .” Obesity is at an all time high, including in very young children. People continue to smoke, some drink too much, and some “practice” inact ivity rather than taking the time and effort to exercise. Nutritional recommendations issues are neglected as many people continue to opt for fast food , and too little time is allocated for adequate sleep . Meanwhile, technology is profoundly chang ing our lives. In some ways, the change is good. We have access to more information than ever , and we have many more ways of sending, distributing , and receiving it. But wisdom suggests that electronic communication is not always desirable — it lacks a “human touch ,” something that we all need. Many of the things we want to communicate, for example, are communicated much better in face to face conversations, in a handwritten letter or card, by telephone. All of these factors are worth examining as we are searching for the perfect Christmas gift this holiday season. T hink about something that will stir the human emotion — especially your own emotion. Think about someone who may just appreciate a telephone call, or someone who needs your time and attention, or someone w ho simply needs a kind word or a hug. Visit someone who is alone, send someone in need a care package anonymously , and your Christmas emotional happiness scale will be off the charts. I guarantee it! Also i magine the best gift you can ever give yourself — a promise to be as healthy as you can be, a resolution to use less electronic and more human communication, a decision to share your time with someone who needs your help, and especially, a conscious choice to be thankful for all the good things life brings you. Here’s h op ing your Christmas is filled with all the joy this season is all about. May the new year bring you health and happiness , and I will continue to play my part in helping you be your healthiest ever.
