On August 26, 2007, Detroit area UNWLA members and members of the Ukrainian community gathered at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in War ren, Michigan, to celebrate the 16th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The keynote speakers for the event were historian Dr. Marta Bohachevsky- Chomiak and journalist Rostyslav Chomiak. The author of Feminists Despite Themselves, Dr. Marta Bohachevsky-Chomiak, is a former UNWLA vice president and has also served as director of the Fulbright Foundation in Kyiv, Ukraine. Our honored speakers, both of whom have spend considerable time in Ukraine since the coun try proclaimed its independence in 1991, were introduced by Olga Liskiwsky, former editor of Our Life and current corresponding secretary of the Detroit Regional Council. UNWLA members warm ly welcomed their esteemed “po-sestra” and her husband, wishing them both further success in their professional and personal endeavors. The title and theme of the keynote speech was “Fakty I Mity Nezalezhnoyi Ukrainy” (Facts and Myths about In dependent Ukraine), and the guest speakers gracio usly answered numerous questions evoked by their presentation. The program also featured Detroit’s own Olga Solovey (Branch 58), who accompanied soloist Maria Nazarenko and directed the ensemble Golden Bells, consisting of many soyuzianky from Branch 81 and Branch 58. Branch 129 was honor ably represented by two very gifted members: Tania Bedrus recited Dmytro Pavlychko’s poem “The Curse” (Kliatva), and Ruslana Proonko presented a passionate rendition of Ivan Franko’s “Moisei.” The author is president of UNWLA Branch 96 and organization chair of the Detroit Regional Council.
