January ПО, 1ГП4 Bishop " П 11 am T. Manning St. John's Cathedral Amsterdam Avenue and 110 Street New York, N. Y. Honorable Sir: We, American women of Ukrainian descent, respect fully submit for your kind and sympathetic attention certain facts, concerning the present unbelievably terrible famine in Ukraine under Soviet Russia, which facts, we believe, merit the most careful consideration. What is happening in Ukraine? The Ukrainians are doing now what they have done for centuries in the past: They refuse to s-ibmit to a code of teachings which, al though old and well established a^ong the Moscorites and some Asiatics is entirely antogonistic to the Ukrainian concent of life. To eliminate this cultural variation which 1fferentiates the Ukrainian people from the Soviet, attempted mixture of races as a spiritual individual unit, the Moscow government іч determined to end the Ukrainian opposition to the communistic views even though it becomes necessary to starve out 4П,СЮ0,000, Ukrainian Christians as the enemies of the communistic gods. "Burinr the past year several millions of the in habitants of Ukraine under the Soviets have died from actual Starvation", so reports Professor Richard Sallet of Northwestern University of Chicago. The existence of this terrible famine in Ukraine has been repeatedly proven by the leading European and American press. It is impossible, of course, to give the exact figures as to the total number of deaths arising from this great famine, principally because of the rigid censorshin in Soviet Russia. Nevertheless, it will be sufficient for us to affirm the well authenticated reports of impartial American and European newspaper correspondents, that during the past year several million inhabitants of Ukraine have died a terrible death from starvation, and that even cannibalism was discovered in several sections of the country. Although we are grief stricken at the realization that millions of our kinsmen have starved to death, and other rrillions are facing the same terrible fate, yet, of particular horror to us is the shocking condition of the children of Ukraine, whose tender years are no de fense to the cruelty and rapacity of the Bolshevik oppressors of the Ukrainian people. Perlians no other children have suffered so terribly and for such a long period of time, as have the children of Ukraine. Carvetb Wells, in his rccent book, the"Kapoot" , states: "We ourselves hapnened to be passing through the Ukraine and the Caucasus in the very midst of the famine in July, 1032. From the train windows, children could be seen eating grass. The sight of small children with stomachs enormously distended is not at all uncommon in Africa or other tropical countries, but t’is was the first time I had ever seen white children in such a state." Mrs. Sofic Rusow, President of the National Ukrainian Women's Council of Europe, reports that many Ukrainian villages arc deserted except for bands of small children, helf naked and covercd with vermin. They have lost all semblance to human beings and wander from one village to the next stealing food wherever they may. And therefore, in view of all of these circumstances, so briefly outlined herein, we, American women of Ukrainian descent, on behalf of these children and starving kinsmen, агт>еа1 to you and ask your kind per mission to gather at your many churches, contributions which are to be used for the purchase of food and medical supplies. Yours very truly, EMERGENCY RELIEF COMMITTEE Dr. Nellie Pelecovicb, Chairman
