VALERIY HNATENKO — AN ARTIST FOR THE SAKE OF ART In Ukraine the 1960’s and 1970’s spawned a complex generation of artists who made brave strides to find new expressions for their art, attempting to shed the ideolog ically oriented, restrictive and narrow confines of “so cialist realism.” In pictorial art there emerged a poly phony of styles and trends. Many artists reached to their heritage for inspiration and direction. Valeriy Hnatenko, a Ukrainian artist, began his stu dies in 1964 in Odessa, a port city on the Black Sea, abundantly rich in history and culture. At the Odessa Art School the young Hnatenko learned the principles of academic drawing, the technique of using color and the elements of composition. The predominant focus in the school was on realism and naturalism. This period served as a foundation for young Hnatenko, giving him a strong background in human anatomy, still-life and landscapes. Artists visiting the school brought with them the most recent artistic trends in the Soviet Union, while field trips to Moscow’s and Leningrad’s major museums allowed the students to become acquainted with the great art of the past. Hnatenko was very drawn to the work of French impressionists such as Paul Gauguin and especially Vincent van Gogh, whose art and writings he studied religiously. The work of these masters had a strong impact on the young artist’s future personal creative style. In 1970 Hnatenko moved to Lviv, a city which became his creative sanctuary, a positive force in the Valeriy Hnatenko and son Nazar. 1980.
