Cross in Drohobych, the murals at the Lviv Polytech- nical Institute, the paintings at the Ostrih Historico- Architectural Museum, and the frescos in Uzhorod Cas tle, in the Armenian Cathedral in Ivano-Frankivsk, at the monastery in Manyava (Skyt Manyavsky), and others. The work Hnatenko did as a restorer helped him immeasurably as a creative artist. He developed his expertise as a colorist and learned different art styles. The proximity of the best examples of Ukrainian artistic heritage also had a great influence on Hnatenko, devel oping a pride and love for the cultural achievements of his people. On the practical side, the job as a restorer allowed the artist to support his family. Hnatenko’s paintings and drawings had no hint of conformism or compromise. His personal creative work was contemporary in its forms, in the treatment of sub ject matter and in philosphy. Outstanding in Hnatenko’s body of work is his group of portaits which are rich and varied — both in types of people represented and in the expressive stylistic range with which they are rendered. Common to them all is the artist’s keen and poignant characterization of his subjects. In numerous portaits the influence of Van Gogh is evident, be it in the style and execution of the portrait or in the choice of the subject. Like van Gogh, Hnatenko had the uncanny ability to befriend the aver- "HALUE ЖИТТЯ”, ВЕРЕСЕНЬ 1989 age, everyday people and to gain their confidence quickly. But unlike Van Gogh, Hnatenko did not gener alize the characterization of his subject. Rather, he gave his subject individuality and uniqueness, thus establish ing and reaffirming his own artistic personality. The paintings and drawings of Valeriy Hnatenko touchingly reflect the artist’s enchantment with the folk art of Ukraine. His love for embroidery, pysanky (Ukra inian Easter eggs) and ceramics stayed with him all his life. He was an expert in the field of folk art and deeply appreciated these treasures left for posterity by count less nameless craftsmen. There is no doubt that Hna tenko’s feel for color was the result of a direct influence by the rich color schemes of Ukrainian embroidered shirts, ritual cloths, kilims, as well as the magical world of the pysanka. Hnatenko’s tie with nature flourished with his Odessa period, where the artists who aided his development Валерій Гнатенко. Ілюстрації до роману П. Нанііва "Тричі продана". 1971 р. Папір, туш, перо.
