“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТО ПАД 2017 WWW. UNWLA .ORG 33 • Avoid looking at electronic dev ices that shine sig- nificant light as they may be the cause of not be- ing able to fall asleep. • If you cannot fall asleep, do not keep looking at the clock . Instead, it is better to get up, perhaps have something to drink, read something that is relaxing , and then return to bed. M any over the counter (OTC) medications are available . One popular sleep inducer is Melato- nin , which has been helpful mostly to individuals who travel in different time zones . Other OTC meds are also available, but be aware that t h ey may work for some and not for others. T here are also many prescription medications that are helpful , and th ese should be discussed with your physician. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also becoming quite useful in handling sleep disorders. T his re- quires several sessions with a therapist and is fre- quently well worth the effort. It is good to remember that we spend a good third of our lives sleeping. Sleep is good. It is an activity that repairs, restores, rejuvenates and recharges us. Make every effort t o correct any is- sues that prevent or disrupt sleep . Sweet dreams! (But I also hope this article was helpful and in- formative and did not put you to sleep! ) An Invitation to Non - Ukrainian UNWLA Members Back in January 2017, we published a lovely artic le called “Why We Joined.” Written by Irena Gramiak (UNWLA Branch 88), the article was about four generations of Ukrainian diaspora women, three of whom (the author, her mother, and her great - grandmother) joined the UNWLA. Renia’s family was part of the po st - war immigration of Ukrainians to America. Since the article was published, I have had several con- versations with other UNWLA members whose ethnic roots are not Ukrainian but whose family ties in- clude husbands of Ukrainian descent, a situation I found (a nd still find) intriguing but hardly alien because my own story is a mirror image of this phenomenon — I married a non - Ukrainian who found my ethnic background interesting and who enjoyed the cuisine, the music, the art, the people, the history, and the cult ure and customs that were part and parcel of my identity. We were married by a Ukrainian priest in a Ukrainian church. My two bridesmaids were my sister and my friend Irene: the former wore a yellow gown and the latter wore a blue one; the reception featur ed a local Ukrainian band and the traditional bread and salt ceremony. And the bottom line of this rambling paragraph is that I would like to issue a formal invita- tion to non - Ukrainian members of the UNWLA who married Ukrainian men: You are hereby cordia lly invited to share the story of how and/or why you joined the UNWLA with readers of Our Life . Please type your tale in a Word doc and send via email to unwlaour- life@gmail.com with “Why I Joined” in the subject line. Please include your telephone number a nd best time to call in the Word document with your story. Hope to hear from you soon but am not imposing a deadline as this is an invitation not a command. – tsc , English language editor __________________________________________________________________ _____ Thinking Logically My father taught me logic: “ Because I said so, that's why.” My mother taught me even more logic: “ If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me.” Як д умати логі чн о Тато навчив мене логі чн о д умати : “ Тому що я так сказав , і вже .” Мама ще більше навчила логі чн о д умати : “ Як впад е ш з гойданки і зломиш карк , не підеш зі мною до склепу .”
