10 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2017 Dear readers, this month I would like to share with you the events I’ve participated in, along with members of our Executive Board, since the last is- sue of Our Life went to press. As an important part of the diaspora, UNWLA le adership tries to at- tend and support other organizations’ efforts as this shows unity and solidarity within the commu- nity. September 16, 2017 marks the 50 th anniversary of the Ukrainian World Congress, a milestone that specifically marks 50 years of repre senting and uniting Ukrainian communities worldwide for the purpose of furthering the interest of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. One of a series of confer- ences during this anniversary year, under the motto “Ukrainians together — the future is ours!”, was held at the Princeton Club of New York. The program for this event was entitled “UWC at 50 and Beyond — the North American Vector,” and as president of the UNWLA, I was invited to chair the closing remarks session as well as to introduce for- mer UWC President Askold Lozynskyj. Today, the UWC encompasses 53 countries and is recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Coun- cil. The UNWLA is a member of the UWC and pays annual dues. September 18. President Petro Poroshenko and the First Lady of Ukraine m et with community leaders at the Ukrainian Museum. The president of the Museum Board, Ch r yzanta Hentish; Museum Director Maria Shust; and UNWLA President Ma- rianna Zajac greeted the couple at the museum en- trance and participated in the round - table format of the meeting. Besides thanking those present for their support and efforts on behalf of Ukraine, President Poroshenko summarized his view of many of the challenges Ukraine is facing. We had a chance to talk with Mrs. Poroshenko before the event began and d iscussed with her the UNWLA’s projects in Ukraine and the UNWLA “Blahodijna Ukraina” award. September 24. Officer at Large, Mariya Andri- yovych represented the Executive Board at the an- nual meeting of the New England Regional Coun- cil. The president of the RC and members of Branches 73, 106, 108, and newly established Branch 139 each reported on their work for the 2016 – 2017 timeframe. Everyone warmly greeted the president of Br. 139, Olha Sawchuk of Stam- ford, Conn. After the reports were presented, Christine Melnyk was voted in as the new presi- dent of the NE Regional Council. We congratulate her and thank her for taking on this responsibility. Mariya Andriyovych, on behalf of the Executive Board, thanked everyone for their dedication, en- couraged close communi cation at all levels and shared a P ower P oint slide presentation of the lat- est UNWLA projects.
