24 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2016 OBITUARIES Dr. Nataliya Bovkun 1966–2016 Nataliya Bovkun passed away suddenly in her hometown of Kyiv, Ukraine, on Sunday, Oc- tober 2, 2016, at the age of 50, after battling com- plications from pancreatitis for over two months. An educator, volunteer, loving wife, mother, daughter, and friend to everyone she met, she will be missed by all. Nataliya was born on August 29, 1966, in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine, and spent most of her life in Kyiv. She was always a helping hand while growing up, taking care of her little sister Elena. She never received a bad grade in school and was a perfect daughter to her wonderful par- ents. In 1988, she married Serhiy Bobrovnyk. She and her loving husband welcomed their first daughter to the world in 1989; a second daughter was born 1992. Nataliya received her Master’s de- gree (1988) and a PhD (1997) from the University of Food Technologies, where she later worked as a professor teaching multiple chemistry courses un- til she moved to Houston, Texas, in 2001. Facing several obstacles along the way, she quickly ac- customed herself to a new culture and learned English. In 2006 she began working for the Hou- ston Independent School District (HISD). Most of her time with HISD was spent at Houston Acad- emy for International Studies, where she taught chemistry and started a dual credit chemistry class through collaboration with Houston Com- munity College (HCC). In 2009, she also began teaching evening Earth Science and Chemistry classes at HCC. Nataliya was active in the Houston Ukrainian community and was a member of the American Cultural Club of Houston and Branch 118 of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. Throughout her 15 years in Houston she helped out at events and activities planned by these organizations. During her short time with us, Nataliya touched many lives: her loving family, wonderful friends (including those from her childhood years because she never lost touch with them), the many colleagues she worked with, and countless young students whom she taught over the years at varyious education levels. She will always be re- membered for her welcoming smile, a never- ending sense of adventure, and a fearless attitude about everything she did in life. Nataliya is survived by her loving husband Serhiy Bobrovnyk, daughters Hanna and Mariya Bobrovnyk of Houston; parents Peter Bovkun and Nina Nikolenko of Kyiv; sister Elena Sokolov- skaya and niece Ludmila Sokolovskaya of Kyiv; son-in-law Nicholas Caroccio of Houston; father- in-law Leonid Bobrovnyk; and many other family members and friends. Funeral and burial services were held in Kyiv on October 5, 2016; a memorial service at Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church of Houston was held in November. Nataliya, smiling down from Heaven, will be forever in our hearts and never forgot- ten. We Mourn Their Passing The UNWLA recently lost two Members at Large: CHRISTINA R.
