16 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2016 the liturgy summarized the discussed topics and reviewed assigned projects. This was followed by the sound of heartfelt goodbyes of the members of the UNWLA “team.” On September 20, Nadiya Savchenko vis- ited the offices of the UNWLA and was greeted by a small group of local UNWLA members. Ms Sav- chenko was accompanied by Lyudmyla Kozlovska, president of Open Dialog Foundation, an organi- zation based in Warsaw, whose mission is to de- fend the human rights of Ukrainians (among oth- ers) held unjustly for political reasons in Russia. After Roksolana Misilo and I greeted Nadiya, we underscored that the UNWLA is a non-political organization and that although she is viewed as controversial, the United States respects free speech, adding that we would like to offer her the opportunity to share her thoughts with us. She was very amenable to this and grateful for the support the UNWLA showed her while she was imprisoned and spent two hours exchanging thoughts and opinions with us on various matters. The corruption in Ukraine was a central topic, and Ms. Savchenko added more and new examples to what we already knew. Most attendees requested pictures with her, es- pecially Br 125 mem- bers who chose Na- diya as their patron- ess. Nadia Savchenko in UNWLA conference room The 92nd Street Y Street Fest is held an- nually on 16 blocks of Lexington Ave in New York City. This year, the fest was held on September 18 and, for the first time, the Ukrainian Institute was invited to participate in the International Way (a cultural showcase). The Institute graciously invit- ed the UNWLA and the Ukrainian Museum to join this highly attended street fair. All partici- pants agreed that this was a new and great oppor- tunity to showcase our projects and our publica- tions. On Saturday, September 17, the Princeton Club of New York hosted a symposium presented by the Center for US-Ukraine Relations and commemorating Ukraine’s 25 th anniversary of in- dependence. The UNWLA was one of 14 sponsor- ing organizations of this event. This outstanding day-long event saw historians, academics, politi- cal figures, journalists and diplomats discuss Ukraine’s distant and recent past followed by an assessment of Ukraine’s future. The evening ban- quet speakers featured Tom Ridge (US Secretary of Homeland Security, 2003–2005), Madeleine Albright (US Secretary of State, 1997–2001) and Borys Tarasyuk (UA Rada Foreign Affairs Com- mittee Deputy Chair). While the daylong program offered many opinions and viewpoints on various topics regarding Ukraine, the evening speakers were strongly united in support of Ukraine and its people. In the meantime, I hope that readers enjoy my travel partner UNWLA 4th VP Roksolana Misilo’s account of her first trip to Ukraine, which begins on page 5. _______________________________________________ A special Thanksgiving greeting to our membership and subscribers and their families to express our sincere appreciation for your loyalty and support.
