201 2 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 33 The Healing Spirit of the Season by Ihor Magun, MD, FACP One of the most rewarding aspects of being a physician is the daily opportunity to see the value of life and human emotions. One gets a chance to observe true love and devotion — even if sometimes they are not shown until the last moment. This is not that unusual as all of us get caught up in day - to - day work and various activities, often forgetting about what life is actually about. We all have d aily responsibi lities that just seem to pile up higher and higher. We become enslaved to our electronic devices to the point that we could actually use some d igital detoxific a- tion. But it does not have to be this way. We can change and be come better in many ways. It's never too late to become a better person , but it has to come from deep inside. I would like to share with you s ome touc h- ing stories from my work as a physician . One patient of mine makes a daily trip to see his wife who has severe Alzheimer's disease and needs to be in a special home. She does not recognize her husband , yet he go es to visit her every single day. While she may not recognize him , my patient says, he knows who she is and was , and will never fo rget that fact. One young man whose mothe r had died after an accident donated her organs (lungs, hear t, and liver) to three individuals — giving them a second chance for life. This type of gift was li t- erally so precious that the joy resulting from it was u nimaginable . The se individuals have b e- come a second family. One patient who had gone through a rough time when her husband was in hospice r e- membered the caring visits of volunteers that made her stronger and helped her pull through the tough times. It w as a caring word, a smile , and just a few minutes of real concern that made all the difference. Now she provides this inspir a- tion to others , volunteering her time and helping those in need of encouragement . One patient just needed to see and hear that his family cared and loved him by just co m- ing to visit him . One simple gesture can change everything. A s we approach this busy season , with lists of things to buy and do , make sure you jot down a few additiona l tasks. Make time to tell your loved ones and friends how much you really appreciate and care for them. If you are sincere about your feelings, these things are easy. Try to smile more often and be thankful for all your blessings. You do not have to n ecessarily donate organs, or volunte er at hospitals or other places. Even a simple phone conversation with an old friend, a lonely neighbor , or someone who could use a sincere hello can make a difference . Try to do an act of kindness daily — you will be sur prised how good it makes you feel! You will find that these kind gestures benefit not only others but you as well, leaving behind a lasting and deep sense of gratitude and peace. I sincerely hope that the joy of this season will help you begin a journe y to a kinder and more giving inner spirit , which will result in a better, healthier you.
