10 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 2012 “ Weaving a wreath, together” was the touc h ing closing ceremony of UNWLA Branch 73's celebration of its 50th anniversary on October 28th in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The branch’s President, Kateryna Tanchyn, and her Jubilee Commi ttee planned a joyous program, which ended with each table’s guests weaving a flower into a wreath pr e- sented to them by the branch’s members. A symbol of unity, a symbol of life! Lida Bilous, VP of Public Relations and daughter of one of this branch’s foun ders, and I were proud to present a certificate of appreciation for the branch’s five decades of dedic a- tion to our organization. On the eve of this same day, October 28th, Hurricane Sandy hit the shores of Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York causing dev astation. To the best of my knowledge and after communicating with each of the Regional Council Presidents, ever y- one in those Ukrainian communities survived. The Executive Committee voted unanimously to contr i- bute $2,500 to the Red Cross of the tri - state a rea victims of the hurricane. The UNWLA building is located in lower Manhattan, which did not have electricity or heat for almost a week; these cond i- tions and the affected New York City transportation system and disrupted airport service necessitated the cancellation of our annual National Board mee t- ing (scheduled for November 2 - 4). It has been r e- scheduled for February 1 - 3, 2013. This year the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is marking 45 years of activity uniting the global Ukrainian diaspora while contr ibuting to the strengthening of Ukraine’s independence. The UWC has member organizations in 33 countries and ties with Ukrainians in 14 additional countries. It co n- tributes to the development of a strong, flourishing, united Ukrainian community and promote s Ukra i- nian national interests. UNWLA Vice President of Public Relations wrote a greeting to the UWC on behalf of the UNWLA as its member organization. In it, she stated that “ in this terrible and difficult time when Ukraine is again in danger of losing it s freedom , the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America unites with the Ukrainian World Co n- gress to help the world community recognize and respond to the unpre cedented severity of new threats to freedom and democratic life in Ukraine. We, just like ou r predecessors, feel responsible for the conservation, protection and development of these big and very imp ortant ideals.” The celeb - ration of the 45th Anniversary of the UWC will take place on November 17th in Toronto, Canada. This is the same day when the UNWLA will be partici - pating in the ‘March of Remembrance’ in New York City and in the Ecumenical Service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to begin the 80th Anniversary Comm e- moration of the Genocide in Ukraine. As the year of 2012 comes to an end, it is na tural and necessary for our organization to assess its achievements. I feel confident in stating that the UNWLA has had a successful and productive year. In the sphere of education, the UNWLA women’s studies program at the Ukrainian Catholic Univers i- ty in L’viv, Ukraine, had a successful kickoff, thanks to the generosity of our Regional councils, branches and individual donors and the cooperation of the Rectorat e of UCU. In the social welfare sphere, we’ve continued to partner with Doctors Collabora t- ing to Help Children and Shriners Hospital in hel p- ing pediatric burn victims in Ukraine and those brought to Boston to be treated at Shriners. In add i- tion, the UNWLA supported the second annual Shriners Outreach Clinic in L’viv. The work in our nursing homes in Ukraine has been further develo p- ing since its inception. Our Scholarship Program, whose funding was some what affected by the eco n- omy, continues to thrive. In the cultural sphere, we have awarded grants to Zaporizhia University for the study and research o f the works of Shakespeare. Our Life archives of issues since 1944 have been digitized and can be found on our website and Google. The UNWLA website continues to evolve as our branches and regional councils become more comfortable in contributing their new s. The writing of the English history of the UNWLA has begun. Our Life continues to enrich the lives of our readers as it shares the news of our organization as well as offers interesting and timely articles on its pages. Our Life covers continue to reflec t the talent of our Ukrainian American women. These projects have been successful because of the commitment and hard work of the members of our Executive Co m- mittee and National Board, which includes our R e- gional Council Presidents and all Chairs of Standin g Committees! Also, Our Life editors have continued to show their dedication to publishing a high - quality and timely publication. I thank each and every one of you as together we have made a difference in the lives of many. This is the true measure of our su c- cess. May this season of Christmas bring joy, peace, and harmony to you and your families!
