“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ГРУДЕНЬ 201 2 WWW. UNWLA.ORG 17 Протягом 45 літ членки жертвенно працювали, щоб здобути приходи. Тут треба згадати довголітніх членок Олену Рохман, Стефанію Ландвіт, Анну Захарко, Лесю Морав - ську, Нену Сідвірну, Марію Стрижак, котрі разом з їхніми подругами посвячували свій час для СУА. Для здобуття коштів відділ влашто - вував льотерії, осінні забави, Святвечірні тра - диційні зустрічі 6 січня упродовж багатьох років. Організовувались автобусні прогульки до Гантеру, на Верховину, на Союзівку, до Українського Музею в Ню Йорку і атракційні програми в Рокфеллер Центр та інші імпрези. Гарний прихід д ля відділу давав продаж квит - ків на українському фестивалі у Ґарден Стейт Арт Центр та продаж вареників та інших продуктів під час тих імпрез. 45 років ми з гордістю святкували усі наші почини і цікаві річниці у відділі, окрузі, централі і під час конвенц ій СУА. Важко зібра - ти всю проведену працю 92 - го Відділу упро - довж 45 літ, але усе залишаєтся у пам’яті на - ших членів, у дописах журналу «Наше життя», у конвенційних книжках і архівах СУА. Бажаємо членам Екзекутиви, Головної Управи та всьому членству СУА щасливих, радісних свят Різдва Христового, Нового Року та Йордану. Нехай Новонароджений Спаси - тель обдарує усіх Вас Божими ласками, силою, енергією для нових здобутків у праці на благо Союзу Українок Америки та розвитку та проц - вітання незалежної України. LECTURE BY U.S. AMBASSADOR MELANNE VERVEER Ukrainian Catholic University, L’viv, Ukraine November 12, 2012 It is a wonderful pleasure for me to be back in Ukraine, to be in this beautiful city, and a special honor to be here at the Ukrainian Catholic University. “It is delightful for me to be with all of you today. My grandparents – both on my mother’s side a nd my father’s side were born in Ukraine.” (spoken in Ukrainian) This country has always had a special place in my heart. My grandparents came to the U.S. from this region in the first wave of immigr a- tion from Ukraine at the turn of the (twentieth) cent ury – more than 100 years ago. As a child growing up during the Cold War in a Ukrainian - American family, we were ever mindful of the o p- pression experienced by the Ukrainian people, but we, like Ukrainians here, believed that fre e- dom would one day triumph. There are strong links between our two countries, not least of which are the one million Ukrainian - Americans; however, the strongest bond is the values we share. I am pleased to be here today with a great friend of Ukraine’s, and one of our top diplom ats, Ambassador John Tefft – U.S. Ambassador to this country. I first came to Lviv with then - First Lady Hillary Clinton in 1996, just a few years after Ukraine became independent. As she said then, “Even in the face of unspeakable horrors, the people o f Ukraine, living under Soviet domin a- tion, did not give up. Instead, you found the best shield against oppression – you started down the road to democracy.” Even then – over 15 years ago, when many of you were very young – we felt that commitment to demo cracy in all the people we met here. I remember well, as though it were ye s- terday, we were welcomed to St. George’s Cath e- dral by a very impressive young theologian, who was not yet ordained a priest. That was someone you know well – Boris Gudziak. Even then, he was engaged in service to people with special needs, which continues here today. Being at the Cathedral reminded us of the struggle against o p- pression experienced by the Ukrainian Catholic Church, which became the Church of New Ma r-
