August 4,1997. Washington, D.C. At the invitation of Vice President Albert Gore, UNWLA VP Martha Bohachevsky Chomiak, together with other Ukrainian American representatives, attended a briefing on the USA-Ukraine Binational Commission co-chaired by Vice President Gore and Ukraine's president Leonid Kuchma. Presiding over the briefing, which was convened as a gesture to reassure members of the Ukrainian American community about the status of USA-Ukraine relations, was Leon Feurth, member of the National Security Council and aide to the Vice President. Mr. Feurth paid special tribute to President Kuchma for his successful efforts in having all NATO members approve a special charter between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Alliance. Special emphasis was given to the importance of non-governmental organizations (NGO's) in both countries, especially women's organizations. It was stressed that additional assistance to women in Ukraine would allow them to take a more active part in building a new democratic society in Ukraine. August 21,1997. Matawan, N.J. UNWLA Auditing Committee Chair, Joanna Ratych, audited the 1996 financial books of the UNWLA Scholarship Fund and reviewed the UNWLA, Inc. Inventory Sheets. Anna Krawczuk and Luba Bilowchtchuk were in attendance. UNWLA Auditing Committee Chair Joanna Ratych with Orysia Jacus. UNWLA Scholarship Program Treasurer. UPDATE FROM THE UNWLA SOCIAL WELFARE COMMITTEE BY LIDIA CZERNYK, CHAIR The economic crisis in Ukraine continues to affect its oldest and the youngest citizens the most and the UNWLA's Social Welfare Committee has focused special attention to the elderly and children when sending financial assistance. This summer, thanks to generous donations from the Ukrainian community, the Committee was able to send fifty children from Chomobyl and Eastern regions of Ukraine to the "Zorepad" children's camp in the Carpathian Mountains. The children, aged six through nine, spent most of August at the camp. Another twenty children, mostly from Ivaniv and each with health related problems, were given the opportunity to spend twenty- four days at the Children's Health Center "Dzereto" in Truscavets, Ukraine. We are very grateful to UNWLA Vice President Martha Bohachevsky Chomiak and UNWLA Scholarship Program Treasurer Orysia Jacus who visited these centers this summer and were instrumental in settling the financial matters associated with the children’s camp visits. Special thanks is also due Atena Pashko, President of the Ukrainian National Women's League of Ukraine, for her cooperation in this endeavor.
