T hus, th e h isto r y o f th e U k rain ian w om en ’s p ress in th e U k rain ian SSR is v e r y b rief. I t b eg in s as la te a s 1930 w ith th e appearance in K h ark iv o f “S eli- an ka U k ra in y ,” la te r renam ed to “K o lh o sp n y tsia U k ra in y .” T h is jou rn al w a s th e organ o f th e Central D iv isio n o f W om en W orkers and F a rm ers o f th e C entral C om m ittee o f th e Com m u n ist P a r ty o f U k rain e, and in th is ca p a city i t served a s a ch an n el fo r P a r ty propaganda. W hen th e U k rain e u n d erw en t one o f th e m o st h o r r ify in g tr a g e d ie s in it s h isto r y — th e m an -m ad e fa m ine d urin g th e en forced co lectiv i- za tio n o f 1932-1933 — w h en 10 m illion people, am on g th e m s e v eral m illion children, w ere sta r v ed to death, th e jou rn al carried a rticles ab out th e “j o y ous and h app y life o f U k rain ian w om en and children under th e P a r t y ’s w ise lead ersh ip .” E q u a l ly “jo y o u s ” in th e opinion o f th e E d ito r s w ere th e con tin u ou s ar r e s ts , p u r g es and d ep ortation s o f U k rain ian in te lig e n tsia , fa r m ers and y o u th to sla v e labor cam ps in S iberia. In 1945, fo llo w in g W orld W ar II, “K o lh o sp n y tsia U k r a in y ” w a s renam ed „R ad iansk a Z hinka'. T h is civ ic p o litica l and lite r a r y - cu ltu ral jou rn al h a s b een appear in g fo r 24 y e a r s in K iev, p u b lish ed jo in tly b y th e Council o f P r o fessio n a l U n ion s and th e U k rain ian W rite rs U n ion. I t is now ed ited b y M. R . P rykhodko, w ith th e a ssis ta n c e o f a 10-m em b er E d ito r ia l C om m ittee. L ik e i t s p red ecessors, “R adian sk a Z hinka’ is p rim arily a p o liti cal jou rn al w h o se com m en taries are P a rty -o rien te d , in d irect op p o sitio n to th e in t e r e s ts o f U k rain ian people. In th e p a st fe w y e a r s “RZ” h a s had th e u n enviab le ta s k o f m a k in g lig h t o f th e tr a g ic p lig h t o f U k rain ian y o u th w h o a re de nied a d m itta n ce to co lleg e s and u n iv e r sitie s and a re forced to seek em p loym en t on co llec tiv e fa r m s fo llo w in g th e ir g ra d u a tio n fr o m S o v ie t h ig h sch ools. M enial p h y sica l labor is g lorified , and th e p a g e s o f ”R Z ” are fu ll ed w ith p h o to s o f w om en d airy w orkers, sw in eh erd s, tr a cto r d rivers, b eet p ick ers and fa c to r y em p loyees. S im ila rly g lo rified a re o th er fe a tu r e s o f life . T h e is s u e s fo r 1969-70 sin g th e p ra ises o f L en in on th e 100th a n n iv er sa ry o f h is b irth , t h a t sa m e L enin w h o b ro u g h t t h e U k ra in e a bloody h a r v e st, la ter p erp etu ated b y S ta lin . In th e p a st f e w y e a r s co m p eti tio n w ith w e ste r n U k rain ian w om en ’s p u b lication s h a s forced “R Z” to r a ise it s te ch n ica l sta n d ards som ew h at, and i t n ow fe a tu re s a rtic les on fa sh io n , fa m ily liv in g , and recreation . N o w and a g a in th e r e appears in th e p ress th e clear, h o n e st opinion o f th e U k rain ian w om an — h er s tr iv in g fo r tr u th , m oral it y and eth ics, h er love fo r h er hom eland.
