Photo: J. Starosti'ak. FROM THE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP SERIES The second course in the UNWLA Branch 72 Leadership W orkshop Series was held on May 11, 1965 in New York City. W alter Odajnyk delivered a lec ture on “The Role of Our Youth in Ukrainian-American Life.” Mr. Odajnyk is the author of several books on political sub jects. A t the present tim e he is preparing for his Ph.D. degree in Political Science and Philos ophy at Columbia University. The speaker touched on all the various aspects of U krainian life as perceived by the younger members of the U krainian com m unities. These included the U krainian language and its pre servation, the dual emotional ties w ith the USA, the land of birth, and the Ukraine, the land of the ancestors, growing-up in the U krainian community, and escape from it. The speaker also stressed the im portant role, played by the U krainian women in preserving the Ukrainian language and traditions in the home. Among the various needs of the Ukrainian-American com m unity, Mr. Odajnyk enum erat ed more and better scholarship funds, and old-age homes, two pressing needs which have inter ested the UNWLA for some tim e. The m atter of correcting m isinform ation about the Uk raine in the American press and publications, which Mr. Odaj nyk also included in his list of vitally im portant “needs,” is still another concern of the UN WLA. The lecture was reprinted in four installm ents in the “Uk rainian W eekly,” beginning with the June 5, 1965 issue, and end ing w ith the June 26 issue. INTERNATIONAL LUNCHEON A t the 74th Annual Conven tion of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, held in New Orleans, La., a call for the crea tion of local Captive Nations Committees was made. Its au thor was Mrs M ary Dushnyck, Organizational Chairman of the UNWLA, who attended the Con vention as Secretary of Women for Freedom, Inc. A t the In ter national Luncheon on May 9, 1965 she delivered a report, warning the delegates of the constant th reat of communism in our midst. Mrs. Dushnyck was also inter viewed by reporters and her re port was mentioned in articles in local papers. On the same day she was guest of honor at a din ner sponsored by the Louisiana State Federation. ADVICE ON NATIVE W EAR Head Coverings for the M ature Woman The Editorial Board of “Our Life” has received an interest ing inquiry from the women members of the SURMA Chorus in Chicago. The women have identical folk costumes from the Poltava region, generally regard ed as the m ost representative Ukrainian costume. But, they ask, w hat about head coverings ? Some of the chorus members are middle-aged women, who rig h t ly feel th at the flowered w reaths commonly associated w ith the costumes, are too young for them. A kerchief is not practical, for it is too warm, and covers the ears. This problem gave us a good opportunity to study the dress customs. We agreed th a t the w reaths were somewhat too young-looking. However, we did learn th a t in addition to the ker chiefs, U krainian women also wore various caps and other highly stylized head coverings, especially appropriate for m ar ried women. In this issue we show one il lustration of such a head cover ing for m ature women. Others will follow. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ВЕРЕСЕНЬ, 196)5 21
