18 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2011 UPDATE FROM THE PRESIDENT Since the Convention in May and as you read in the October issue of Our Life , our UNWLA delegation visited UCU in August. The reason for the visit was to meet with members of the administration and discuss the logistics of the proposed program. The success of this visit and further discussions between the Executive Board a nd Marta Kolomayets, UCEF’s Director of Programs & Communications, have enabled us to form a working plan for our contribution to this landmark project. UNWLA will seed this effort with $25,000, which will be presented through Partriarch Sviatoslav Shewchu k at Fordham University in November, and this will mark the kick - off of our fundraising campaign. This ambitious project will be backed by an agreement between UNWLA and the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, allowing our organization to build a long - standing relationship with UCU. Our goal is to establish an effective lectureship that will influ ence the growth and development of the young Ukrainian woman. Marianna Zajac President, UNWLA clergy have bee n in the forefront of women’s education, establishment of daycare facilities, and other such causes. The Rector/President of UCU has repeatedly proven capable of filling those big shoes. Let’s give him a brand new pair of shoes — Gender Studies. Borys Gudzia k, given the funding, would make certain that the Gender program remain functional. So it is natural for the UCU to create a functioning Gender Studies Program through our initiative and with our help. Funding such a program could be UNWLA’s final contribu tion to Ukraine. The country is rich, the people intelligent, even if, as in our own United States, it sometimes seems that thought and initiative are dormant. By creating an Endowment for a Gender Studies Program at UCU, we could demonstrate an intelligen t initiative for all of Ukraine. UCU has proven, through the years of its existence, an ability to build on its resources, not merely to use those resources. The original resolution, proposed by Sophia Hewryk, the Vice - President for Cultural affairs, and upheld by the President Marianna Zajac and t he full Executive Board, was accepted by the Convention. Such a donation would make a powerful statement of the strength of the oldest continuous Ukrainian w omen’s organization in the world. We have a chance to make a lasting difference through this dramat ic grant for establishing Gender Studies at UCU. Such a donation would reflect the goals of the past generations of Soyuzianky — to develop ourselves along with our society. To be taken seriously, you have to take yourself seriously. That is as true for orga nizations as for individuals. UNWLA, a direct successor to SUU, is the oldest women’s organization among Ukrainians. It happens to be the only community organization that remained united in Halychyna in the inter - war period, where most other organizations split into ideological two’s or three’s. It was the first Ukrainian organization to hold a world Congress (in 1 934). Its American - based journal, Our Life , is the oldest published women’s journal in Ukrainian (not counting Zhinka , but that too is a longer s tory). The vote at the recent UNWLA convention was a most commendable, dramatic move, supported by all the delegates worthy of the most far - seeing founders of our organization. As a long - time member of UNWLA, I congratulate the XXIX UNWLA Convention on its initiative.
