“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2011 13 SHARING THOUGHTS, VIEWS, & NEWS Why do people get involved as volunteers — be it within an organization or as individuals? What is the motivation for people to volunteer their time, money, and talent? What does it take for volunteers to get involved and stay involved? The question is WHY? People do things for their own reasons, often joining a v olunteer organization because it meets their personal needs — either for friendship, or for belonging, or for some other self - serving end. However, belief in a cause usually results in the strongest level of commitment. When people believe in “the cause,” ev en if that cause will cost them a great deal of personal sacrifice, they will be highly motivated in their volunteer work. People join and volunteer because they believe the cause is right. This is our goal with each member of our organization — to promote b elief in our “cause.” But how can we explain when someone gets involved beyond his own community? The cause, in this case, needs to be more global, more universal. Such is the case with Drs. Gennadiy Fuzaylov and Daniel Driscoll of Doctors Collaborating to Help Children, Inc. T hese dedicated physicians have been helping young Ukrainian burn victims since 2005, starting with the severe case of Nastya Ovchar whose condition they continue to monitor. (UNWLA was involved in a fundraising campaign for this child.) To date, these phys icians have assisted ten Ukrainian patients by organizing their care at Shriners Hospital; they coordinated transportation and housing, obtained donor funding for the transportation and living expenses, and were available as a 24 - hour resource for question s regarding their care as well as any other day - to - day issues that could arise in a foreign country. As has been reported in the last issue of Our Life , UNWLA has partnered with DCtoHC, Inc. and its President Dr . Fuzaylov, who continues to plan and develop an upgraded burn care system with Dr . Vasyl Savchyn, Director of the Burn Care Unit in Lviv Hospital #8. Dr . Savchyn, on the initiative of Dr . Fuzaylov and with the sponsorship of the Ukrainian Medical Association of North America, visited Boston (Mass Ge n’l Hospital and Shriners) from Sept 14 th to 27 th to observe burn care techniques in these top - rated hospitals. He was also able to give several presentations on some effective but long - forgotten practices of Ukraine to the residents and doctors of MGH. On Friday, September 23 rd , the community of Boston (which generously houses families of the patients brought to Shriners) organized a gathering for Drs . Fuzaylov, Driscoll, and Savchyn. I travelled to Boston to take part in this exciting event and to present certificates of recognition from UNWLA to these dedicated physicians. To return to the question posed above, why would a physician, one who is not of Ukrainian descent, put in boundless efforts and sacrifice his family time to help these Ukrainian childre n? When we posed this question to the Doctors, they could not answer. I will take the liberty of doing so — it is their humanitarianism and their compassion, their idealism. And this is their “cause.” We thank them and pledge to continue to help when and as we can! As this article is written, we are preparing for the presentation of the proposed plan for the UNWLA Gender Studies lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University to the National Board during From left: Dr . George Gamota, Dr . Daniel Driscoll, Dr . Gennadiy Fuzaylov, Marianna Zajac, Dr . Vasyl Savchyn, Olga Zabulatovna, and other participants in evening of recogni tion held in Boston 09/23/2011
