16 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2011 ... WOMEN NEED TO KNOW AND ASSERT THEIR NEEDS INTELLIGENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY . years without particular help from our community. Yet the community expects service from them, giving little in return. Many of our diaspora organizations still expect women to handle food preparation for festivities, not to even mention childcare. Societal changes in our Ukrainian - American community generally occur because of the influence of our American surroundings. Remember, societal change is what makes it OK for your husband not only to change the child’s diapers , but also to take a leave from his job to be the primary caregiver for the infant. Societal change in Ukraine is proceeding, but we cannot expect it to mirror our experiences. Ukrainians have to develop their own society them - selves; they cannot copy a model, even if one existed. The quality of the society will largely depend upon the quality and the expectations of the many individuals who make up that society. Weak individuals form either unstable societies or authoritarian ones. For women to help shape a society that contributes to their own growth as much as to that of men, women need to know and assert their needs intelligently and effectively. This is where gender comes in. Gender studies are not limited to women. We scholars popularized the grammatical term “gender” rather than “sex” in the study of all topics in which it is feasible to pay attention to roles in society that are determined by virtue of the studied object be ing male or female. Simply put, if you introduce the study of sexual roles in society to a classroom of pre - teenagers, you will have a squirming, giggling audience incapable of a serious discussion. (Come to think of it, the group in question need not be t eenagers.) By using the sexually neutral term “gender,” we can study the manner in which sex affects society. In the process, we have to study not only how kutia is made, but maybe begin to understand why, of all the places in the world, a country as rich in agricultural resources as Ukraine should have a shortage of buckwheat groats kasha or be incapable of developing a linen industry. (Yes, there has been a shortage of hrechka in Ukraine in recent years, and the once world famous linen industry is virtual ly nonexistent.) Properly understood gender studies provide a fuller historical picture, avoid reducing the past to an ideological or genealogical interpretation, and challenge individuals to look closely at themselves and their environment. Just as nation alism cannot be simplified to the limited understanding one or another group imputes to it, so it is with gender. Both need intelligent study, not fiery rhetoric. Individual efforts, however, cannot legitimize a whole field. For that you need institutional support and an understanding of the field. Think back to the 1 970s and the study of Ukrainian topics in universities. It was only after the newly established Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute legitimized the field that it became easier to push through courses on Ukrainian topics in other universities and colleges. In the U . S . there is obviously not enough interest, either among researchers or among students, for a gender studies program within a Ukrainian studies concentration to justify any attempt to create one. There is just no need for this specialization in the United Sta tes. But it is nice to know that the Ukrainian Program at Columbia University has included a visiting lecturer in Gender Studies from Ukraine in its anthropology courses. The scholars did that without our intervention or support, for that matter. In Ukrain e the situation with gender studies is different. There is more than interest; there are women who have done much in terms of equal rights legislation and scholars who work for the most part alone on gender issues. There still is a need, however, for examp les of successful women beyond teachers, underpaid medics, and unreal dreams of successful biznes - leydi . Introducing gender studies into the university is an effective means for a society to integrate the study of the whole of society, which is done throug h gender issues, in the curriculum. Otherwise, vulnerable women become marginalized and are drawn into activities we later bemoan.
