14 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛИСТОПАД 2011 October 14 - 16 and, as a follow - up, to the XXIX Convent ion passing vote. As Dr. Bohachevsky - Chomiak writes in her piece, UCU is an “independent university, it educates all students, it does not teach Catholicism, but it does encourage thinking within an ethical framework.” And this is the reason why this progr am will be effective — it can and will reach women of all religious and ethnic backgrounds. As this column is being written, Marta Kolomayets, Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation’s Director of Programs & Communications, is in Lviv, discussing details wit h administration and faculty, and upon her return, she will relate the best options for the lectureship to be held for the first time in the spring of 2012. This is a very exciting project for UNWLA, and it brings our involvement with Ukrainian institution s to a new academic level. Stay tuned for further details in the next month’s issue. On October 5 th , a working dinner of New York City community leaders and the President of the Ukrainian World Congress, Evhen Czolij, took place at the UCCA/UNWLA building in New York City. During this meeting, the President shared UWC’s current projects in the countries where Ukrainians have settled as well as in Ukraine. One of the main focuses of this organization is the human rights issue facing Ukrainian minority commun ities in various countries, such as Georgia, Slovakia, etc. but especially Russia. Another critical and current issue is the closing of three television stations in Kharkiv. Three opposition television channels have been taken off the airwaves in Kharkiv a mid controversial circumstances, leaving activists complaining that Ukraine’s second - largest city has no channels to report critically on the pro - presidential municipal authorities. If this is correct, then freedom of speech — in this case, media — is being ab used in Ukraine. Per UNWLA by - laws, we defend these freedoms and support the right of all the citizens of Ukraine to enjoy them. As per President Czolij’s request, UNWLA will voice its dismay at these violations and appeal to the appropriate parties.
