24 “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2010 BRANCH 85 MASKARADA On Sunday, October 25, 2009, Branch 85’s Sadochok Vishnevy j hosted its annual Children’s Maskarada. Open to the Ukrainian community, the event was held at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church hall. With over 200 people attending, the event was a tremendous success. Parents, g randparents, aunts, and uncles were enchanted with the handmade crafts made by our Sadochok students to decorate the church hall. Mrs. Marika Baran led the children in a variety of games and dances. The children especially enjoyed the traditional “parade of costumes,” during which each pumpkin, ballerina, firefighter, and superhero climbed onto the stage and announced to the audience exactly who he or she was. S pecial thanks go to our Sadochok parents, who were responsible for this year’s maskarada: Oksan a Mytrofanyuk, Natalka Reyes, and Emilia Marushka. Branch members who assisted at the event should also be commended: Roxana Charkewycz, Lesia Forowycz, Katia Hrynewycz, Natalka Jachtorowycz, Tanya Jacenkiw, Lida Marushka, Christine Palcan, Hanusia Powers, Renya Stasula, Tunia Stefaniuk, and Talia Taran - Lisowsky. _____________ _____ _______ _____ ________________________ BRANCH 85 AND CHICAGO’S CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD EXHIBIT On November 7, 2009, members of UNWLA Branch 85 (Chicago Region) ushered in the holiday season early by gathering to decorate the Ukrainian Christmas tree for the annual Christmas Around the World exhibit in the main rotunda of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Although the Chicago Regional Council has been involved with this exhibit since its inception over 40 years ago, our branch assumed responsibility for the annual event 10 years ago, completely refurbishing the Ukrainian tree with hand - crafted, vyshyvka - themed ornaments and sparkly spider webs. This year we were fortunate to have nine members and even several husbands help in setting up and decorating the 20 - foot tall tree with a multitude of beautiful ornaments. Each year, as part of the Christmas Around the World exhibit, each country has the opportunity to perform in f ront of the large holiday crowds. This season’s Ukrainian Day performance, also organized by our branch, took place on December 13, 2009, with performances by Iskra School of Ukrainian Dance and Cherubic Voices Children’s Choir. It is an event that many pe ople visiting the museum enjoy and specifically look forward to, as evidenced by the large crowds attending the performance every year. Thousands of visitors to the museum learn about Ukraine and our Christmas traditions by viewing the tree and attending o ur programs, and our branch members take great pride in being able to showcase our rich Ukrainian heritage in this way.
