As time passed, the fascination waned as we again turned our attention to work and family and social issues that were more immediate and earthbound. Among the weighty issues that concerned us more than space travel was the threat of terrorism, a concern that has preoccupied all of us since the tragic events of September 11,2001. Most of us do not know the date that space shuttle Columbia was launched, and our knowledge of its sci entific mission is cloudy. Yet all of us remember the sad day the Columbia and its intrepid crew failed to return to earth. A bright and sunny day turned gloomy and oppressive as we listened to horror-struck news commentators relay the events, and as we viewed images of the disintegrating shuttle. Even more painful to see were the images of the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the service of this great country and in the service of science. We join the millions of Americans who grieve for these seven men and women who dedicated their lives to exploring the last frontier. But as we mourn them, we recall their noble goals, their commitment to an ideal, and their passionate love of this great cosmos that presents us with so many challenges. And while we contend with earthly matters that often cause us to question humankind's lack of wisdom and lack of compassion, we find com fort and hope in knowing that such men and women exist. It is they who represent the best that humanity has to offer and it is they who inspire all of us to strive to reach for the stars. Very truly yours, Iryna Kurowyckyj, President Good Morning, Miss Ukraine by Annie Buhay On a recent vacation to Puerto Rico, a Ukrain- ian-American family from Michigan was sitting pool- side, admiring the view of the ocean. Suddenly we noticed a rather large contingent of security guards and FBI agents, roaming the grounds of our peaceful re sort. Thinking the worst, we inquired about their pres ence and learned, to our delight, that there was no threat or danger — the extra security was precaution ary protection for the contestants of the Miss Universe Pageant who happened to be staying at our hotel. Among the contestants was Liliana Gorova, represent ing Ukraine. Upon hearing the news, our son Nicholas em barked on a mission. He was determined to meet Miss Ukraine, speak with her, and be photographed with her. As the days went by, the contestants were busy with their scheduled activities, and while Nicholas saw many of those representing other countries, he did not see Miss Ukraine. On the last day of our vacation, while my hus band was loading our baggage in the taxi that would take us to the airport, Nicholas and I waited in the lobby, hoping for one last chance to see her. Our vigil was rewarded when a group of contestants emerged from a private dining room, accompanied by security guards. There she was! In a loud voice, Nicholas greeted her in Ukrainian," Good morning, Miss Ukraine! My name is Nicholas Buhay." An amazed Liliana Gorova, stopped, looked around, and finally noticed the boy waving to her. She ran past her guards, hugged and kissed Nicholas, and agreed to pose for a picture with him, a picture that became a piece of history when Ms. Gorova repre sented Ukraine in the 2002 Miss Universe Pageant.
