EDITORIAL We have now passed the mid-point of International Women's Year, we are beginning the celebration of America's Bicentennial and the 100 anniversary of Ukrainians settling in the United States. These occasions offer un precedented opportunity to show off our achievements to underline our con tributions not only to America but also to our own heritage. It is as if we were offered a chance to show the world who and what we are. Now is also a chance to tell the world the truth about Ukraine and the plight of our people in our home land. Now, while we have an audience. Now we should reflect on the achievements of our organization and give thought to future goals. And what about the future? Sad as it may seem, it must be stated that we do not know how to work in harmony and mutual respect. Before each new under taking, with zeal and enthusiasm there is also strife, the blame and unwarranted criticism. It seems individual ambitions overrule common sense. People think that only their way is the right way. There seems to be a satisfaction to show some one else to be in the wrong, and to remain silent about ones own short comings. Who benefits from all this? With the marvelous opportunities offered by the afore mentioned anniver saries, the question arises: are we ready and mature enough to work in a united, constructive way? Is this a chance for a great deeds, or an open door to strife and misunderstanding? RECRUITING YOUNG MEMBERS In the article "Recruiting Young Members" Olha Stawnycha states that the future of each organization is in its members. It is therefore, very important to get young people to join. Ms. Stawnycha hereby offers these points that stand to draw young women to the ranks of UNWLA. 1. There is an erroneous image of UNWLA propagated by some people — that we are an organization of grand mothers. That is not only untrue, but such statements show a lack of respect for our organization. This and other irresponsible comments like it, may have a negative effect on young women who are not familiar with UNWLA. 2. Our program must offer activities which would draw the interest of young women. The time when members of UNWLA prepared buffets for various community functions has come to an end. 3. Members must become active in the leadership of other organizations within the community, especially those which until now, have been dominated by men. 4. In regions where there are no special branches for young members, existing branches should offer programs to interest young women. 5. Young women must be allowed to assume posts of leadership (if they qualify) on Regional and national level of UNWLA. 6. An active campaign accentuating achievements, stressing our strengths, pointing out our program is the best way to interest new members. The ways of the press and radio — Ukrainian and English — should be utilized. 7. Personal contact is an important factor in acquiring new members. EMBROIDERY Embroidery can be applied to any article of clothing which can be worn to work, such as a blouse, a jacket or even a belt. We are pleased when it is noticed by others, for then we can boast that we made it ourselves. These designs were created in the Ukraine by Ukrainian designers. Model "Maursia" — is a blouse made of thin linen with long sleeves, de corated with embroidery. The skirt is made of woven, multicolored fabric. Topping this is a jacket matching one color of the skirt. Model "Luba" — is a dress of light colored polyester, with long sleeves. The stand-up collar bears a design matching the belt. BETWEEN US & THE TELEPHONE. A tricky question is asked by Lubow Kalynowych, the lady with insight into our mores and morals. Are our Ukrain ian young girls aggressive or passive, and which should they be? Someone may claim that our ancient beginnings stem from a matriarchal society, while someone else may say that that is a myth propagated by writer Dokia Humenna, only because she is unmarried. If she had a husband, she would understand why such a reality is unreal. Oup history pages speak of brave, strong Women — but then what does the instinct to protect ones family and territory have to do with the matriarchal system, or on the whole, with women aggressiveness toward men. From our literature, the women we find in the central regions of Ukraine were strong types. In western Ukraine, they seem to be more demure. However, the general tradition was, that strong or demure, a girl had to be "won” as if in a battle by the man. Today, some people say that our young girls are playing "hard to get" with Ukrainian boys. They are cool, passive, haughty and seem uninterested. The boys are timid, treat them gently and with restrain. With non-Ukrainians the girls become more autspoken and aggressive. Is it because they are not being "won" as old tradition would have it by our boys? Although Ms. Kalynowych does not advocate strong aggressiveness, she does advise a more open attitude on the part of the girls. However, she stresses that all behavior should be tactful, in good taste and dignified .
