OUR LIFE MONTHLY, 'published by Ukrainian National W om ens League of America Vol. XXVII. JULY—AUGUST, 1970 No. 7 Our Pane! Discussion At the Annual Meeting of the UNWLA National Board, held on June 13-14, 1970 in Philadel phia, a panel discussion was in troduced for the first time as a mode of group interaction. The topic of discussion was the Re gional Councils, their meaning and work within the system of our organization. We all know the advantages of panel discussions. The very fact that they allow several people to present their viewpoints on a given topic make them more in teresting than one-person pres entations. The panelists at our Board Meeting were Mrs. Dora Rak, Newark (“The Aims and objec tives of the Regional Councils”), Mrs. Luba Shandra, Chicago (“The Financial basis of the Re gional Councils”) and Mrs. Ma ria Kohutiak, Utica (“Organi zational problems of Regional Councils”) . The discussion leader was Mrs. Ivanna Rozankowska of New York. All three panelists as well as the moderator gave excellent presentations. They are all sea soned UNWLA workers, who in the long years of their associa tion with the UNWLA have been able to clearly pinpoint the prob lems involved in the organiza tional network. They presented the problems for consideration by the Board members present. The following are some of the points which were brought out during the discussion. —The Regional Councils act as intermediary bodies between the Headquarters and the Branches. Until recently they co ordinated the work of the Branches in their Region. More recently they have begun to take the initiative in carrying out the work plans of the Executive Board. Will this prove beneficial to the organization ? —The Regional Councils need trained people to carry out their work. Such people have gotten their organizational training in their Branches and the Branches are not always willing %o let them go. Should the Regional Councils train their own workers, or should they get their training in the Branches? —The Regional Councils are dependent for their financial support of the Branches. In some Regions the Councils have al ready constituted their financial basis according to the number of the members. It is desired that other Regions follow suit. The Council has to fulfill the programs of the organization Oksana Liaturynska, who died recently in Minneapolis, M inn., was born in the Ukrainian province of Volynia in 1902. As a sculptor she studied in Prague and gradu ated in the 20-ties in liberal and applied arts. Interested in ancient Ukrainian times she started si multaneously with poetry on this topic. Her songs are resounding the heroic endeavors of these remote times. She relied strongly on the Ukrainian folklore and gave many talented poems of this kind. Oksana Liaturynska xvas also a connoisseur of Ukrainian folk art. Her Easter eggs were renowned for their independent composition and ancient beauty. Oksana Liaturynska * * * * * May peace upon this spot preside. Here will I rest, as hours pass. Above my head, that comrade tried, My horse, and the tall feathergrass Will keep the guard of honour true. High in the night the stars will glitter. Ever the wormwood will be bitter, Ever the cornflowers will be blue. A spear, a fang, a claw, a hoof. A brave man here held foes aloof. Here mammoths bellowed. Here the bear Strode shagy to his cavern-lair. Here the hawk wheeled in shining skies, While on the lake a black swan plies.
