18 WWW. UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2012 man Har ry Mitchell was there to respond to any questions the delegates might have. A high point was meeting the Mayor of Scot tsdale Jim Lane, as he gave the delegates an hour of his time and was happy to pose for mu l- tiple photos. The Mayor and the delegates also exchanged gifts . The Greater Phoenix area is fortunate to have some people prominent in their knowledge and exper ience relating to Ukraine. One such pe r- son is Attorney James Huntwork, who explained his involvement in law and election reform in Ukraine after Ukrainian independence in 1991. He had compiled and translated laws for possible use by the new government; the se laws were d e- signed to encourage business and allow private ownership. He had also set up a system of public observation of elections in Russia (under Gor - bachev), Ukraine, and Armenia. Joseph A. Kane - field, President of Arizona State Bar, explained to t he delegates the importance of an Inde pendent Bar (Law Association). On another day, Judge O r- est Jejna and Attorney Patience Huntwork spoke on the importance of an Independent Judiciary. The Ukrainian delegates and the local Ukrainian - American chil dren in Phoenix . ____________________________ The delegates also had a chance to just be tourists. They toured the Arizona State Capitol, viewed Native - American dancing, enjoyed shopping trips, at - home Bar - B - Qs, area restaurants, and host famil y meals and hospitality. One evening, a particularly gene r- ous young man, who had recently immigrated to Arizona from Ukraine, took the delegates to a Sun’s Basketball Game! A farewell party was held in the home of a PTPI member, where guests could enjoy the view of th e city lights while eating Mexican food, li s- te n ing to Ukrainian folk songs, and making pre - sentations of gifts an d promises of exchanging visits in the future. Many thanks to al l involved who helped make the delegates ’ visit the special week that it was! More involvement on the part of interes t- ed people in the Greater Phoenix area is welcome , as many more visitors are expected from a variety of different countries through the efforts of People to People International. Please visit www.ptpiaz .org for more information. Future vi s- it s of Ukrainians to Arizona and Americans t o Ukraine are also being plann ed by PTPI. Author’ s Note: As a member of both People to People International and the UNWLA, I would like to see more intera c- tion and cooperation between these two organiz a- tions, as well as participation of the academic co m- munity at Arizona State University in nearby Tempe. With more advanced notice about future visits and events, I am confident that this will happen.
