THE FIRST EASTER EGG A legend It happened a long time ago in the city of Jerusalem. The Holy Virgin sat mourning for Her Beloved Son. Three days after His burial, Mary still sat like a stone statue, mute, refusing food and drink. Many pious women came to comfort Mary, praying Her to take a little nourishment, but all in vain. There was a young girl Hanna, who often came to see Mary. On Sunday, when the news spread that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead, Hanna took a basketful of eggs, her only possession, and went to visit Mary. Hanna knelt down before the Holy Virgin and said: "Cry not oh grieving Mother! Your Son has risen from the grave! Rejoice!" And then the Holy Virgin spoke for the first time in three days: "Yes, I know. I saw my Son in my sleep. His face and clothes shone with such might, that my eyes were unable to resist. Yes, I know my Son has risen from the grave." Then Hanna handed Mary her present, the basketful of eggs. The Holy Virgin received the present happily. Tears poured from eyes and fell on the eggs. And a miracle happened. Where a tear from the holy eyes fell on the eggs, there a beautiful design appeared— crosses, stars, flowers, and butterflies, all in gleaming colors. All the eggs shone like precious stones. With great joy, she ran about the streets of Jerusalem handing an egg to everyone she met saying, "Rejoice! Jesus Christ has risen from the grave!" For many hours, she greeted people in the same way and yet her basket stayed full the entire time. And the people who received the painted eggs gave them to their friends saying "Rejoice! Christ has risen!" So, in a short time everyone knew about the wonderful miracle, the resurrection of Christ. In memory of that joyful event, young girls in Ukraine paint beautiful designs on eggs on the Saturday before Easter. The Holy Virgin blesses their craft and inspires them to paint beautiful ornaments. Then, on Easter Day, all Ukrainians give each other these eggs saying, "Christ has risen."
