Previously published in World Literature Today, Winter 2002. Reprinted here with permission of the author. Liudmyla Tarnashyns'ka is one of the most active literary scholars of contemporary Ukraine. A journalism graduate of Kyiv State University, she also holds a doctorate in literature from the Ukrainian Free University in Munich. A long time editor in the department of criticism in the weekly Literaturna Ukraina, she is now a full-time scholar at the Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, and is the recipient of the 2000 Oleksandr Biletskyi Prize in literary criticism. Sezon vichnosti (Season of Eternity) is but a small sample of Tamashyns'la's critical work, and contains reviews, articles, the author's interviews with various contemporary Ukrainian writers, and her interpretations of their work. Separate chapters are devoted to Lina Kostenko, the most prominent of the living Ukrainian poets; Valerii Shevchuk, Ukraine's premier novelist, whose work has been the subject of a 20 separate monograph by the critic; the poets Iryna Zhylenko, Vasyl' Herasymiuk, Teodoziia Zarivna, Vasyl' Makhno; the prose writers Nadiia Morykvas, V. Shkurupii, and others. Tarnashyns'ka also pays attention to Ukrainian writers and critics in exile who were (or still are) active in the West: she discusses the work of Sviatoslav Hordyns'kyi, George Luckyj, Ostap Tamavs'kyi, and Larissa Onyshkevych. A few of the essays included have a polemical tone, especially the one in defense of feminist critics. Sezon vichnosti was published by Ihor Trach, editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian literary journal Zerna and its literary book series, both of which are headquartered in Zwickau, Germany. In addition to Tamashyns'ka's articles, the volume offers a preface by the publisher, an introduction by L'viv critic Stefaniia Andrusiv, and afterword by Iurii Vivtash, and a bibliography of Tamashyns'ka's published critical articles. Andrusiv characterizes Tamashyns'ka's inter pretative method as "dialogues with the writers," as a "text-mirror" which also reflects the author's own esthetic philosophy; Vivtash underscores Tamashyn s'ka's complete independence from the remnants of Marxist-Leninist methods of criticism and her involvement in the conflict between existentialism and idealism.
