persons will be kept open.” She also urged that "a better acquaintance with all local and state representatives and congressmen should be an important part of the 1944/45 programas for the members of UNWLA.” OVERVIEW There were very many articles which were printed in the first 12 issues of OUR LIFE magazine and they dealt with a rich variety of topics. These topics encom passed many facets of everyday life of the Ukrainian American woman — home, family, community, the polit ical, economic and social order of the day. Many arti cles gave her an insight into her Ukrainian heritage. The magazine became important to many people for various reasons. It offered practical advice for the homemaker at a time of economic uncertainty and shor tages. It offered consolation to families whose loved ones were physically involved in the war, over and over preaching a message of optimism and victory. It urged PAST PRESIDENTS OF UNWLA ...some brief notes In commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, we honor the achievements of the Presidents of our organi zation. Their contribution to the UNWLA has promoted the successful growth and development of the first non political, non-religious Ukrainian women’s organization in the United States. Each president faced unique challenges in office which each solved in her own particular way. This uni queness became an integral part of the organization and our heritage. JULIA SHUSTAKEWYCH — A p ril - June, 1925 First president of the UNWLA, whose term in office lasted only a few months. She was nonetheless one of the original initiators of the formation of the organization. JULIA JAREMA — 1925 -193 1 As the first long term president of the organization, her guidance sought to formalize programs which the organization developed such as cultural and social wel fare programs. involvement in the war effort through support of and participation in the programs of the American Red Cross and the purchase of war bonds. OUR LIFE became the chanrtpion of Ukrainian iden tity on American soil. In its countless articles it upheld the value of our proud heritage and constantly reminded them of those left behind in our native land. It reminded mothers of their duty to raise their children as conscien tious citizens of this country, yet proud and responsible to their heritage. It convinced, cajoled and chastised, when necessary, but in a caring way. Readers looked to the magazine for comfort and guidance, as if to a loving friend. Finally, OUR LIFE became the champion of women and women’s rights. For the first time Ukrainian Ameri can women had a publication all their own, which seriously looked out for their welfare, worried about them, fought for them and guided them. Forty one years ago a proud and noble tradition was started and it is still going strong. MARTA BACZYNSKY OLENA LOTOTSKY 19 3 1 -1 9 3 4 ; 1 9 4 3 -1 9 6 5 A unique and dynamic personality, she guided the organization to exciting new directions. ANNETE KMETZ 1 9 3 4 -1 9 3 5 ; 1 9 3 9 -1 9 4 3 First president of the UNWLA who was American- born. The initiator of the first UNWLA official newsletter V istnyk S U A , which first appeared on the pages of the newspaper A m e ric a in 1939. She strived to gear the programs of the organization to the combined interests of Ukrainian-born and Ukrainian-American women. ANASTASIA WAGNER 1 9 3 5 -1 9 3 9 She was instrumental in obtaining the charter for the organization. During her term in office the official UNWLA emblem was coined. STEFANIA PUSHKAR 1 9 65 -197 1 The promotion of Ukrainian culture particularly folk-art was the primary emphasis.
