MRS. DWYER APPEALS Florence P. Dwyer, member of the U. S. Congress, notified Branch 24 of UiNIWA, situated in her Union County, N. J., about a statement, she prepared for deli very on the Floor of the House of Representatives, in connection with the 41st Anniversary of the independence of Ukraine. This statement appeared in the Con gressional Record. Mrs. Dwyer stressed the signi ficance of January 22nd for Uk raine when the national indepen dence was won. In 1920 invading Communist armies overran the proud and fertile land. Thus, the Ukrainian people became the first in a long series of victims of Com munist terror. But this brutality has not succeeded in killing the Ukrainians people’s undying de votion to freedom. Their fight continues and is led by different means. Whenever the struggle against Communist oppression breaks into the open we can be certain that Ukrainians are play ing a prominent role. Because Union County, N. J., has a relatively large proportion of people of Ukrainian descent among its population, she knows personally of their deep feeling for freedom. It has been a major element in their success as active, public-spirited American citizens. Now Mrs. Dwyer appeals to strengthen our resolve to fight oppression, to oppose brutality, to stand steadfastly against all the relentless pressures of communist totalitarianism. Let us, said she, absorb the spirit and courage of those Ukrainians who have loved freedom so truly that they have died for it. Christmas Customs Around the World Detroit Chapter — 37 Holiday season gives us many opportunities to share our cultu ral background, customs, and tra ditions with other peoples. On De cember 18th, it was my pleasure to appear before the Northwest Women’s Club and talk about Christmas customs of many lands. Naturally, Ukrainian background gave me greater scope and em phasis. After an hour of informal presentation the women were ex- tremely interested in my costume, display articles, foods served on Ukrainian Christmas eve. Bom barded me with questions which evidenced their interest. Felt that those present departed with a far greater understanding- of Ukraine and Ukrainians, and that my ef forts were well rewarded. But there also was a material reward of $5.00. This I accepted graciously and told them it would be contributed towards one of our children’s nurseries, “sadochok” in Europe. Hope this little contri bution will bring a little joy to some youngsters in a Ukrainian sadochok, and brighten their day. My soul was far more enriched by this experience, and I cannot urge strongly enough our youmig women to go out into the Amer ican community and share our cultural heritage with others. Anastasia Volker THANK YOU SO MUCH Dear Mrs. Lototsky: W e have received the children’s books “Golden Bells” and are en closing a check for $15.00 for same. Our chapter has decided to send them to Europe to some needy children. Would you please suggest an organization, which would distribute these books. If you have individual names and ad dresses of children, perhaps we can send them direct. Sincerely yours Donia Demray Secretary of Chapter 37 in Detroit, Mich. Dear Mrs. Demray: On behalf of Ukrainian children in Europe please convey our heartful thanks to the members of your chapter for the gift to such a worthy cause. The Ukrainian Women’s Asiso- ciation of Germany is taking care of educational centers (schools and kindergartens) for Ukrainian children. In each such center they try to organize a chil dren’s library. Your donation would indeed be very much appre ciated by parents and children of these libraries. Any or all book donations should be directed to the President of the Ukrainian Women’s Association in Munich. Our office will be happy to fur nish the address. Helen F. D. Lotosky, Prees. From the dancing party of Branch 63 of UNW LA in D et roit: Mrs. Sofia Leheta in a beige cocktail dress. The U k rainian design is placed on the front and on a shawl, draped from her shoulder. Her purse is also embroidered. Видання C оюзу Українок A мерики - перевидано в електронному форматі в 2012 році . A рхів C У A - Ню Йорк , Н . Й . C Ш A.
