Now on view at The Ukrainian Museum in New York EMMA ANDIJEWSKA: THE LANGUAGE OF DREAMS A prolific poet and writer who became a self-taught artist later in life, Emma Andijewska believes in the creative powers of the unconscious. In her art, as in her poetry, startling juxtapositions of magic landscapes, strange creatures, and ordinary objects brim with awe-inspiring bright colors. Each piece offers kaleidoscopic portraits of both the familiar and the unfamiliar, as figures shift and morph in an explosion of shapes and colors. Her drawings range from simple images to richly illustrated pages filled with complex figures, naked and distorted bodies, chimeric animals, and cartoon-like characters that overlap, mingle, intertwine, or multiply, all part of the artist’s unique vision of the world. Born in Donetsk, Ukraine, in 1931, Andijewska has lived in Munich since World War II. The Ukrainian Museum’s exhibition Emma Andijewska: The Language of Dreams features 32 acrylic paintings on paper, all from the Museum’s collection. The exhibition will be on view through January 8, 2023.
