18 OUR LIFE • September-October 2022 With the onset of the war in Ukraine and the urgent need to provide humanitarian assistance, the UNWLA began a massive fundraising campaign on our social media platforms and website. The response was excel - lent, with substantial funds raised in a short period of time. As the war continues to devastate Ukrainian lives, however, more financial assistance is needed to pur - chase medical equipment and supplies and to provide humanitarian relief. To raise these funds, the UNWLA created a Fundraising Committee, with the objective of securing donations and grants from corporations, foundations, and private individuals. To date, the UNWLA has received grants from Citizens Bank, TD Charitable Foundation, the NY Jets, the Japan Foundation, Morey’s Piers, and others. Various individuals have collaborated with us to create fundraisers for the benefit of the UNWLA. Just recently, one such private endeavor proved to be a remarkably successful fundraiser. She has held numerous posts, іncluding NJ Regional Council President and Public Relations Chair, UNWLA Social Media Chair, and Branch 75 President. Currently, Oksana is a member of the UNWLA Executive Board, serving as Officer-at-Large, and is the Chair of the UNWLA’s new Fundraising Committee. In attendance at the star-studded fundraiser, held July 29 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, were New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Murphy, Senator Cory Booker, Rob Menendez Jr., Representative Josh Gottheim - er, and representatives from the United Sikhs and the UNWLA. The money raised from the fundrais - er was split equally among the UNWLA, the United Sikhs, and the World Central Kitchen. Another such event was the Colors for Peace art exhibition and sale at New York’s Mizuma & Kips art gallery, featuring the works of talented Japa - nese artist Sebastian Masuda. The theme of the event – “Think Peace” – was seemingly simple, but the artist invited attendees “to close their eyes and actually imagine it, and then to realize how com - forting it is to sleep peacefully in your own bed at night,” something most Ukrainians can no longer do. Funds raised from the sale of Mr. Masuda’s art - work over the course of the 3-day event (July 29- 31) were donated to the UNWLA. Citizens Bank organized a fundraiser in late March, a month after the start of the war. Their goal was not only to raise funds for war-torn Ukraine but to give back to the community. The bank hired artist Misha Tyutyunik to create a mural for their new of - fice in New York City’s East Village. Everyone was encouraged to add their creative touch to the mu - ral by painting some part of it. A large grant was given to the UNWLA, and donations received the day of the event were matched. Corporate and private fundraisers, many organized in collaboration with the Fundraising chair, have in - cluded a tennis round-robin for women members of a NYC tennis club, pysanka and film screening events at the Ukrainian Institute of America, a book chat by a successful author (which focused on Ukraine’s cul - ture), a musical evening, a culture day at the Picat -
