4 OUR LIFE • September-October 2022 Olenka Krupa UNWLA 3rd VP – Public Relations Just weeks after russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, with the number of severe - ly injured soldiers and civilians growing rapidly, the UNWLA launched an am - bitious campaign to raise money for much-needed bone fixators and wound VACs (vacuum-assisted closures) – med - ical devices that speed up recovery from traumatic injuries and greatly re - duce the chance of infection. In many cases, bones would never heal without the use of fixators. The campaign ran from April 7 to July 31, with every branch asked to participate to the best of its ability. In all, 42 branches contributed to the campaign, along with two Regional Councils. The total amount raised: a very impressive $377,445.28! Here’s what your generous donations enabled us to purchase: • 497 Hoffman 3 modular external fix - ators from the Stryker Company with 420 sets (with additional parts: wires, pins) of Hoffman 3 external and inter - nal fixators; • 4 trays of Hoffman 3 instrument sets with nailing instruments and implants for internal fixators for two hospitals – these can treat multiple patients and replace components as needed; • 108 external fixators from the Zimmer Bio Company; • 245 negative pressure wound thera - py VACs and supplies (canisters and sponges) from the Genadyne Bio Company. A hospital medic with wound VACs and medical supplies donated by the UNWLA. $18 MILLION WORTH OF CRITICAL MEDICAL DEVICES to Treat Injured in Ukraine Branch Donations Fund
