IN MEMORIAM After immigrating to the United States in 1989, Ulana realized her dream of becoming a teacher at Western High School in Davie, FL, where she taught Biology and Ma - rine Science. Ulana was an active member of the Miami Ukrainian community, most notably the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Choir and the Ukrainian-American Club of Miami. She also supported activities at the (now dissolved) Hollywood Cultural Center and St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Cooper City, FL. In 2013, after Branch 17 experienced a prolonged period of inactivity, the UNWLA Board approached the women of Miami’s community to determine whether they wished to reactivate the branch. Many of the women present voiced support for the election of Ulana to the position of branch president as her interperson - al skills were valued and needed to forge a cohesive group of independ - ent-minded women. Ulana agreed to serve even though she was traveling frequently to visit her grandchildren. Thanks to her efforts, we are celebrat - ing the 70th anniversary of Branch 17 this year. While serving as branch president, Ulana introduced several creative ideas to the group. She was especially interested in attracting young - er members to the branch and focused our efforts on hosting activities that would appeal to the next generation. Branch 17 held a children’s art competition to commemorate Taras Shevchenko and reintroduced Vyshyvani Vechornytsi, Den Heroina, and the like. Following russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, we wrote letters to Congress and lobbied on behalf of Ukraine, demonstrated in downtown Miami, hosted guest speakers from Ukraine, co-hosted a number of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor, and so forth. Ulana’s positive outlook, sense of humor, and sheer joy for living were infectious. She strived to make positive contributions to our discussions and to have kind, encouraging words for those with whom she came in contact. She usually had a song to share on festive occasions and spread much laughter among us all. Those who knew her well would agree that she was the very embodiment of JOY. A bright light has been extin - guished, and we will miss Ulana in Miami. Ulana is survived by her loving husband, Roman; daughters Yaroslava (Michael) and Diana (Matthew); beloved grandchildren Anthony, Ro - man, Nicholas, Henry, and Luke; and “grand-dogs” Bailey and Nutella. Contributions in Ulana’s memory may be made to the UNWLA Donate for Ukraine war fund. May her memory be eternal.
