People took photos of the list of uzvar ingredients , planning to go home and try making it themselves; some offered a variety of great suggestions on the best way to spike it! We also shared some Christmas CDs which were played during the event , and we all wore our v y shyvanky to complete the “Ukrainian Exp erience.” It was a give and take experience during which we learned about customs from other countries ; the event revealed that each culture represented at the fair has its own version of St . Nicholas and a Christmas Tree . And the people raised with those cultures enjoy caroling and merrymaking and have their own traditional Christmas Eve dinners and desserts and specialty drinks that are very similar to our u zvar . We also discovered that there are a variety of charming holiday legends shared by all these countries. Our legend of the Christmas Spider was a new one and an immediate hit ; many of our guests who normally would cringe at the thought of a spider, eagerly bought a spider and web ornaments for their own tree s ! We in turn enjoyed sampling the vari ous desserts from Poland, Italy and Norway (k hrusciki, p annetonne and k rumkake ) and feasted on bratwurst and sauerkraut the Germans were selling along with their Ap fel Kuchen (apple pie) and Black Forest Cherry cake. We also took turns shopping at all the tables, most notably th ose selling chocolates , and we can honestly say we did our fair share of International Relations building! All in all, we had a great time at this new venue; it was to fun to share our crafts, customs, foods and s tories with a new audience and fun to experience and enjoy what other cultures have to offer. As always, th is was a well - orchestrated e ndeavor : some branch members handled the crafts and others the baking, some brought specialty items from Ukraine while o thers helped with planning, collecting supplies, set ting up and selling on the event day and , of course, clean up. It was a rewarding experience that merited a compliment from our German hosts who told us if they could have handed out awards for the best and most colorful display, we would have won!
