24 WWW.UNWLA.ORG “НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ЛЮТИЙ 2020 BRANCH 136 HOLODOMOR EXHIBIT OPENS TO GREAT SUCCESS IN NAPLES Natalie Santarsiero , Branch 136 President, and Valentina Dmitri , Branch 136 Press Secretary During our first exciting seven years, Branch 136 of Naples, Florida , has been busy sharing our cultural traditions and history with the population of Southwest Florida. To date, we have had many successful and varied displays, pysanka workshops, and lectu res throughout this area in libraries, universities and community centers. Inspired by the interest shown by our community and our desire to share the horrific story of the Holodomor, we made a decision. Well over a year ago, we decided to pursue an exten sive Holodomor project. We reached out to the Holocaust Museum and Cohen Educational Center of SWFL in hopes that they would agree to a Holodomor exhibit. We were very elated to re - ceive positive feedback from Susan Suarez, the museum’s director, and curat or Cody Rade ma - cher . A committee was formed for this purpose and included H alyna Traversa ( chair ) , Natalie San - tarsiero (Branch 136 president ) , Valentina Dmitri, Luba Drahosz, Daria Hirniak, and Marie Shandor . Much time and effort was devoted to gatherin g and compiling materials from Canada and the United States, and our Holodomor Exhibit officially opened in early September and continue d through mid - December. We were especially proud and excited to know that not just the general public, but many students of all ages w ould be making field trips to view the museum’s exhibits and would have the opportunity to learn the true history of Ukraine . The highlight of our exhibit was a lecture by Dr. Timothy Snyder, presented in partnership between UNWLA Branch 136 and the Holocaust Museum, on Sunday, October 20 , at Venue Naples, located a short walking distance from the m useum itself. Prior to the lecture, attendees were able to view our exhibit. The feedback was very positive as the exhibit was very well curated. Approximately 200 people, about half of whom were non - Ukrainians, filled the lecture hall to hear Dr. Snyder, the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University, speak about the Holodomor. In addition to guests from Miami and the North Port area of Florida, there were attendees from Chicago, Cleveland, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Wash - ington , D.C. We were especially honored to have Natalia Pawlenko, Member - at - Large of the UNWLA Executive Committee, join us for this event. Introductory panel to Holodomor Exhibit Holodomor Committee. Seated: Branch president Natalie Santarsiero, Committee chair Halyna Traversa. Standing: Marie Shandor, Valentina Dmitri, Daria Hirniak, Luba Drahosz After first outlining the general “lay of the land” of pre - World War I Eastern Europe, Dr. Snyder took us to Ukraine , describing in depth the terror of the Soviet political climate and the forced famine devised by Joseph Stalin to starve to death millions of Ukr ainians. Dr. Snyder moved us with
