“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, СІЧЕНЬ 2016 WWW.UNWLA.ORG 15 In a two-part program in May, we hon- ored our remarkable group of UNWLA Honorary Members (Lidia Bilous, Maria Nawarynsky, Iwanna Martynetz, and Orysia Swystun) and Branch 56 Honorary Members (Iwanna Holowa- ty, Lubow Ingram, Nadia Iwanczuk, and Slawa Maluk). At the celebration, Oksana Lew read a short account of each honoree’s dedicated work in the UNWLA and emphasized how proud we are to have them among us. We also honored nonage- narians Bohdanna Bilowchtchuk, Maria Bojduj, Iwanna Holowaty, Iwanna Martynetz, Halyna Petryshyn, Maria Rejnarowycz, Wira Rowenko, and Stefania Szandra. After celebrating with heartfelt congratulations, songs, flowers, and the singing of “Many Happy Years” ( Mnohaya lita ), we listened to a beautifully recited poem by Nadia Iwanchuk. The celebrants were asked to share events and experiences that helped them get to this stage in life; they spoke of faith in God, posi- tive thinking, and inspiring moments which re- vealed their strong character and values. Some emphasized exercise, such as swimming and walking. One wise honoree who is often asked to share her secret of longevity and zest for life con- fessed that an occasional shot of good cognac helped—but always with a friend, never alone! On that high note, the meeting ended with group photos and a delicious lunch. The Celebration of Heroines (Свято Героїнь) is dedicated to remembering and honoring our past and present heroines. Dr. Vira Bodnaruk pre- sented an account of Nadia’s heart-wrench- ing story, including her grueling 82 days of fasting and her continued imprisonment in Russia on trumped up charges. Our members, as thousands of other Ukrainians, wrote fervent letters and signed petitions to help her cause. Our branch celebrated this year’s 90th anniversary of the UNWLA with an informative presentation by Roxolana Yarуmovych, who spoke about how our organization evolved and flourished through the years. The full presenta- tion appeared in the November issue and de- scribes the magnificent accomplishments of our organization’s many goals. On October 29th we took time out for a fun event—our annual picnic at a delightful loca- tion next to Venice Вeach. Under a spacious pavil- ion, half the columns were decorated with tall silk sunflower stalks mounted on blue wood panels, thanks to Yara Litosch, who ran this year’s event. Ukrainian background music set the tone for mingling with friends or meeting new ones. After our president welcomed all the guests from near
