This year, UN Women, a newly formed entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, supported the intergovernmental body of CSW in its policy formulation. The UN Women Executive Board is made up of representatives from 41 count ries around the world who serve on a rotating basis. We are proud to announce that Ukraine has been elected as one of the four representatives of Eastern Europe to serve on this Executive Board, and we congr atulate Ambassador Yurij Sergey e v on this achieve ment. On February 23, prior to a CSW session held by the WFUWO, Ambassador Sergeyev invited several Ukrainian diaspora organization representatives to a gathering at the Ukrainian Mission to the UN to present and discuss Ukraine’s role in UN Women as well as to discuss future plans for the Chornobyl conference mentioned above. The WFUWO workshop, entitled “Women and Girls in Science and Technology: Obstacles Overcome, Goals Achieved,” explored the effects of patriarchal societies in defining gender roles. The workshop focused on how female and male role models influence the choices that women and girls make in pursuit of studies and employment in science and technology, and interesting and thought - provoking discussions, from various perspectives, ensued . Representatives of Ukrainian organizations from the United States and Canada with the Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Yurij Sergeyev (February 23, 2011) . On March 10, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs held its annual celebration of Women in History month at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. Ulana Hlynska, UNWLA’s Liaison for Branches at Large, represented the UNWLA. The event’s guest speaker was Janice Ruth, Assistant Chief of the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress. Ms . Ruth is an expert on American Women’s History and has created the Women’s History Gateway, digitizing works by and about women at the Library of Congress. For example, the Library has recently scanned for storage Clara Barton’s writings about nursing w ounded soldiers during the American Civil War. (Clara Barton was a pioneer American teacher, nurse, and humanitarian, and is best remembered for organizing the American Red Cross.) The UNWLA is exploring the possibility of digitizing our own archives and i ssues of Our Life . In March, it was my great honor and pleasure to join the UNWLA Detroit Regional Council at its 75th anniversary celebration. The anniversary festivities began on March 6 with a celebratory Mass followed by a lovely luncheon.
