“НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ”, ТРАВЕНЬ 2010 19 Royal Gates Book of Gospels PRICELESS COSSACK ARTIFACTS ON DISPLAY AT UKRAINIAN MUSEUM Since April 25 of this year , the Ukrainian Museum in Manhattan’s East Village has be en home to an extraordinary display of priceless, centuries - old Cossack artifacts and regalia — the stuff of lore, legend, and history. The se items are the core of the exhibition Ukraine – Sw eden: At the Crossroads of History (XVII – XVIII Centuries) , which focuses on a critical and dramatic period in the history of Ukraine . The exhibit features 116 priceless historical artifacts on loan from 23 museums and other public and private collections in Ukraine and Sweden. Among the items are important historical docu ments , such as original letters written by hetmans Bohdan Khmelnytsky, Ivan Vyhovsky, and Pylyp Orlyk , and flags belonging to Hetman Khmelnytsky and Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Among the many oth er unique items showcase d are an exquisite Book of Gospels , ornate silver and gilded Royal Gates from the early 18th century iconostasis of Saints Borys and Hlib Cathedral in Chernihiv , and an eleven - foot - high silver icon case from the Illinsky Monastery i n Chernihiv — all commissioned by Hetman Mazepa and all attesting to his immense contribution as a promoter and supporter of the arts, architecture, and education during the formation of the Cossack state. Ukraine – Sweden: At the Crossroads of History rece ived widespread acclaim from those who were able to view the exhibit in 2008 – 2009 at the National Museum of History of Ukraine in Kyiv ; Ukraine’s Pre si dent Viktor Yush chenko and Sweden’s cur - rent monarch, King Carl Gustaf XVI, at - tended the opening. To day, the exhibition is a unique oppor tunity for visitors to ex - perience a dynamic and dramatic period in the history of Ukraine , a country that gained independence less than 20 years ago after decades of Soviet Communist rule and re pression. It also serv es as a poignant reminder that the battle for independence was already being fought , by Hetman Ivan Mazepa and his Cossacks, more than 300 years ago.
